Hi, what are you looking for?

What is fast, melodic, technical, progressive, and still heavy? Many things actually, but none of which can compare to Earthborn Evolution, the latest discharge by Beyond Creation. The later attributes are common characteristics in many forms of metal, but no other band can fuse these elements while putting a unique brand on their exclusively recognizable songs in the elegant manner that Beyond Creation does.

Maybe it's my awkward obsession with technical metal that got me to over 30 listens on this album, or maybe this Montreal-based 4-piece just knows how to create exceptional music. The Aura was a good freshman release that combined more technical attributes and less melodic flow when compared to Earthborn Evolution. The Aura was pretty impressive for being the first release for the band, but after enjoying the depth of Earthborn Evolution, it's hard to imagine this band has evolved so much since that 2011 debut. If the bass guitar and sweeping guitar segments were coveted on The Aura, this new release has expanded upon these aspects, and also incorporate a melodic progression that can be found in each track. This is a solidifying monument that captures the essence of each song and constitutes the homogeneous feel the entire length of the album.

The difficult aspect of technical (and progressive) death metal (for me at least) is "getting the groove". The multitude of layers, differing time signatures, numerous flying and floating notes; it's what makes the music so good, and so bad depending on who is making it. "Getting the groove" (really understanding what the band is trying to do and deciphering it) can sometimes only take a listen or two and sometimes it never happens. Beyond Creation does not waste time in enlightening its listeners with complex, but rewarding riffs and melodies. Not to say that there is no work that needs to be done in order to fully digest every aspect, but it is more accessible than The Aura and other progressive bands in similar realms.

Every track will not fail to have at least one riff or bass solo that will probe and pull on the one who listens. "The Axiom" is a great example. It starts out with a more choppy flow, which quickly breaks into a swinging type chorus where the bass ebbs and flows gently into a guitar solo that is reminiscent of a more classic metal gallop and driving progression that still leaves room for originality. The closing of the song has a type of breakdown that exhibits a new vocal range for Simon Girard. The throaty lows are the normal standard, but by the end of "The Axiom", Simon is a full blown animal, gurgling on the blood of those he has just consumed who may claim his "one dimensional screaming just isn't enough."

"Earthborn Evolution" is my favorite track, and will not grow old. It's surprising lack of vocals does not subtract from the five minutes and thirty-five seconds that present that perfect blend of melodic progression the band seems to enjoy performing. From bass solos to wondering riffs that span intense powerful deliverance, to grooves that will stay with you for the rest of the day.
From the H.R.Giger like album artwork, to the bio-mec tattoos some of the members sport, this band just doesn't get much cooler. If you're into technical progressive death, the album will satisfy. For those who despise the abrupt halts and drastic turns that progressive metal incorporates, you're in for a confusing, mind bending journey that will leave you completely demoralized. 9/10 because these guys are from Canada.
