The Top 6(66) Movies About Metalheads

ShareNot only am I a metalhead, but I am a total movie junkie. I love 'em. I've seen a lot of movies, and I've seen a lot of metal. So I figured, why not combine the two and pick out my five favorite movies about metalheads. Please note, I chose to leave out documentaries and stick to the fictional side of the fence. Without further ado, here are my six(66) favorites:

1) This Is Spinal Tap

This mockumentary is pretty much the standard to which all metal movies would be compared. They pretty much nailed every comedic aspect of being in a band possible, complete with the girlfriend that tears the two friends in the band apart, problems with measurements of props, and of course, amplifiers that go to 11. There has been much documentation of bands claiming that they are the real-life Spinal Tap, and some musicians apparently not finding any humor in situations that hit close to home:

"According to a 1997 interview in Spin magazine with Aerosmith rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford, "The first time Steven [Tyler] saw it he didn't see any humor in it". When the movie was released, Aerosmith's most recent album, Rock in a Hard Place, depicted Stonehenge prominently on the cover."

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE MOVIE
While many people immediately cite the "This goes to 11" line as the most memorable moment in the movie, the biggest laugh I had throughout the film was when David St. Hubbins says "I do not think the problem was with the band. I think the problem was, there was a stone henge monumnet on stage that was indanger of being squashed by a dwarf", I completely lost my shit. Here is the entire scene:

2) Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

There would be no Beavis & Butthead or Wayne & Garth if it wasn't for Bill & Ted. Before he was "The One", Keanu Reeves was one half of this dynamic duo. This was a movie that was constantly on when I was a kid. If you were a teenager during the early 90s, you may have seen this movie about 100 times. The tale of two metal dudes who time travel via a phone booth was not only funny, but sort of educational, using the time traveling device to maybe teach kids about Billy the Kid, or something, right? Plus, George FN Carlin!

FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE
Wyld….Stallions!

3) Beavis and Butthead Do America

When I was growing up, Beavis and Butthead was my favorite TV show ever. I didn't even have cable at the time, but I always managed to catch it when I was over my friends' houses. Many people may dismiss the characters as idiots, but I think the brilliance, which still holds up today, is in just how wisely Mike Judge writes for these idiots. The movie was the grandest tale the two had to encounter. When their TV is stolen, the duo sets to figure out how to get a new TV, and end up in a world wind of situations all across the country including visiting the Hoover Dam ("Is this is a God dam?"), visiting the nation's capital ("Attention, Attention. We are looking for the chick with big boobs. We are ready to do you now!") and visiting Vegas ("I'm hoping to score big as well. I'm mostly gonna be doing the slots…Yeah, I'm hoping to do some sluts too. Do they have any slots in Las Vegas?… They have so many slots, you won't know where to begin…Woah! ").

FAVORITE SCENE FROM THE MOVIE
It has to be the scene where they meet two dudes who are most likely their actual dads and get told the story of how they were conceived. The clip is below, along with some other funny scenes in the movie:

4) Wayne's World

I once was talking to somebody about this website and what I do on it, and they responded "So,you're like a real life Wayne from Wayne's World…no offense." None taken! I never realized how much my life is based on this one Mike Meyers movie, but it kind of is (except for the big local TV deal). Remember when he was funny and relevant? When you and your friends would quote his lines for months after his movies came out? Well, it all started with with Wayne's World. Anytime we drive through Delaware (we never stop, always drive through…) I quote the movie. Anytime I hear the term gun rack, I think of the movie. Anytime Bohemian Rhapsody is played, I think of those dudes.

FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE
It's gotta be when Wayne and Garth get backstage passes and meet Alice Cooper. The entire exchange is hilarious. We certainly are not worthy…

5) Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

The ultimate metal musical! Some old time fans may complain that some of the jokes are recycled, and some Jack Black haters may point to the fact that Jack Black is in it, but I still think that on it's own, this movie is greatness. For one thing, they had both Meat Loaf and Dio within the first 10 minutes of the movie, so that's a win right there. There was awesome musical moments, great cameos and a hallucination scene. Plus a ton of ganj!

FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE
The epic ending of the movie was so great. They gave the Devil (played by Dave Grohl) his own part in the movie, with TRIPLE BASS DRUMS!!!! What else do you need?

6) Airheads

If you had cable in the late 90's, early '00s, you might have seen this movie on Comedy Central about 1000 times. The tale of a small metal band who just want to get noticed and decide the best way to do it is to hijack a radio station. The movie features an all star cast including Brendan Frasier, Steve Buscemi, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Michael Richards and more.

It's gotta be, who would win in a fight, Lemmy or God…
