It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with Grid’s Human Collapse Syndrome EP.
It bears repeating because it’s true: the internet moves faster than a gravity blast. It’s nearly impossible to keep up. And music is no exception. Umeå, Sweden duo grinders Grid are another band that blew right by me and I’m only now getting to jam this savage, aural wreckage.
Grid plays to destroy. Right out of the gate, the band blazes with “Agree to Serve” (I guess it used to be called “Shackled”, according to their music video). Some quick drum work, a little bit of feedback and the band is in business. It’s an old-school approach too: straightforward grindcore with no frills or fancy bits. Songs are short, sweet punches to the throat.
Grid constantly calls to mind two bands though throughout this EP: Nasum and early Brutal Truth. I know, a Swedish band sounding at home in Sweden is sheer madness. They evoke a genuine callback to Helvet-esque grind but with a heavier, bassier edge. Not quite the speed either, but the intensity is still there. Tracks like “Debt” and “Constant Defeat” have a razor edge. The songs are tightly woven and fast.
Meanwhile, there’s tracks like “Out of Air” or “Privilege the Poor” that lean more towards the early Brutal Truth. They are punkier riffs, leaning less towards brutality and slaughter. But they still bring the rage. And though speed and savagery are favored, the band putting a little bounce into their step at times isn’t out of place.
Human Collapse Syndrome is a grind EP for grind fans. If you like your rage bullshit free, Grid’s got an EP for you. It clocks in at about eleven-minutes so, like a lot of stuff featured here, it pays to put it on repeat. Hit that play button and get to grinding.
