THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From SOULFLY, FATES WARNING, SCAR THE MARTYR and More Out Today – 10/1

Each week when I write THE WEEKLY INJECTION, I find readers bitching about me not covering more "underground" bands. Mind you, I don't do so completely by choice. I review either what I get to review, or what I can find without digging through the darkest parts of the internet.

Anyway, this week is for fans of the "underground." There are a lot of less mainstream bands here that are certainly worth your time. There's a lil' something for everyone here.

To the metals…

Soulfly – SavagesSoulfly-Savages

Genre: Groove Metal
Origin: Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

Marc Rizzo is a great guitarist and most of Soulfly consists of one string heavy riffs, which is a shame. It does get a good pit going though. Savages is what you've come to enjoy from the band. Heavy, driving, groovy jams with a hint of "tribal" music.

Scar The Martyr – Scar The Martyr999762_113054902219941_1077469824_n

Genre: Alternative Metal
Origin: Iowa, Canada, DC, kinda all over the place
Label: Roadrunner

When I read that Joey from Slipknot and Jed Simon got together with a dude from Darkest Hour and some others, I don't know what I was expecting, but I'm not surprised at the results. Perhaps I just hoped something more chaotic? heavier? Straping Young Ladier? Slipknotier? There are some personalities here, but the result lacks personality. Ya know? I dig the guitar work though, it's more frills than Simon ever really had with SYL.

Broken Hope – Omen Of DiseaseBroken Hope

Genre: Death Metal
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
Label: Century Media

Buy now on Amazon.com

Yep. This sure is death metal. Gutteral vocals, technical proficient musicians, the works. I suppose, I do respect them for being a long running band in their genre, but so many bands have utilized this sound that it works against Broken Hope in terms of growing a larger audience now that they've reformed.

Conducting From The Grave – Conducting From The Grave 387442

Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Origin: Sacramento, California
Label: N/A

Buy now on BandCamp

Sweet, one of the few truly awesome bands in my stomping grounds. The band has grown a lot since their early Sumeriancore days. Thrashy, melodic, technical, great.

Fates Warning – Darkness In A Different LightFates-Warning-Darkness-In-A-Different-Light

Genre: Progressive
Origin: Hartford, Connecticut
Label: InsideOut

Buy now on Amazon.com

Greg really, really fucking dug this. However, for as much as I love prog metal, I never really got into Fates Warning. I've always been partial to Jim Mathos' other projects line OSI and Arch/Mathos. The new album is probably phenomenal if you're a fan. I mean, it's not bad by any means, but the biggest appeal of this might just be that it's been so long since there was new material from the band.

Horisont – Time WarriorsHorisont - Time Warriors

Genre: Heavy Metal
Origin: Gothenburg, Sweden
Label: Metal Blade

Buy now on Amazon.com

Here is another band successfully pulling off the throwback band idea. If you are unfamiliar, think the band Graveyard but with more of a Mercyful Fate lean. Pretty cool blues based rock.

In Solitude – SisterInSolitude-Sister

Genre: Heavy Metal
Origin: Uppsala, Sweden
Label: Metal Blade

Buy now on Amazon.com

There seems to be a theme this week. I feel like this band would do very well opening for Ghost (BC), rather than Watain like they have been. They play…wait for it…. old school doom influenced heavy metal, so blood drenched black metal doesn't make a lot of sense for them.

Master – The Witchhunt383448

Genre: Death Metal
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
Label: FDA Rekotz

Buy now on Amazon.com

Old fucks playing the music they helped define. Master are death metal legends, a term thrown around all too often, but it's true. Hell, these guys have half a decade on some of the much bigger names in their field. By George, they've still got it.

Oceano – IncisionsOceano-Incisions

Genre: Deathcore
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
Label: Earache

Buy now on Amazon.com

Can you say BREAKDOWN?!?!?!?

Slutvomit – Swarming Darkness Slutvomit CD cover

Genre: Black Metal
Origin: Seattle, Washington
Label: Invictus

Buy now on here

How do you pass up talking about a band called SlutvomitThe band is worth a listen on name album. If you also happen to be a fan of black metal that embraces raw recording techniques, these silly goofs are for you. Little bummed I didn't find pictures of the band with slutty/vomitty corpse paint on though. Step up your shtick fellas!

Atlantean Kodex – The White Goddess (A Grammar Of Poetic Myth)366400

Genre: Doom influenced Heavy Metal
Origin: Vilseck, Germnay
Label: 20 Buck Spin

Buy now on Amazon.com

This shit is awesome! Like maiden if they dropped their tuning. Has a classic sound without sounding like a shitty band trying way too hard for a vintage sound.
