METALLICA's Next Priority: Writing A New Album In 2014

Metallica are in serious promo-mode for the upcoming release of their 3D movie, Through The Never. The band is all over the place doing interviews, getting their own non-stop Metallica station on SiriusXM, leading up to a show at the Apollo Theater next Saturday. One of the topics that's been coming up in interviews is when a new album can be expected.

It's hard to believe, but it's been 5 years since the release of their last album, Death Magnetic. After spending a considerable amount of time on the road, promoting the release, the band did have some time to do writing in 2012. They have also been accumulating riffs on the road. As for the sound of the new material, while early,  they have been saying in interviews  that it will be a continuation of Death> Magnetic's sound.

In a new interview, bassist Robert Truijillo says the band have been distracted with other priorities recently, but next year is all about writing new music:

"Before all the film stuff, we were jamming these ideas and having a lot of fun. But we got sidetracked. In 2014 it'll be all about getting new music — without any interruptions, hopefully."

Sure, the band could get distracted for a few weeks next year with a quick European tour, and most likely, their third annual Orion festival, but expect them to spend the better part of the year writing. Metallica like to take their time with new music, so I wouldn't expect any new material until early 2015, late 2014 if we're lucky.

The band's 3D movie, Metallica: Through The Never is in IMAX 3D theaters starting on September 27, with wide release on October 4.
