From director David Hall: The show took place in Northfield, Vermont, about half an hour from Montpellier. I honestly don't know how anyone found the place, as on the website it merely said 'Northfield, VT *outdoor show.' If it wasn't for my gps - which led me through a labrynthe of dense trees, narrow roads, steep hills and sharp turns - I'd probably still be lost in Vermont.

The gig - Wolves in the Throne Room, Thou and a couple opening bands - as in a massive field, on the property of a hobby-farm owned by some underground metal enthusiasts and crust-punks. Super nice people.

The owners had clear-cut a section of their property and built a wooden stage for the bands to play on. The stage was a good half-mile away from any accessible road, and up a muddy embankment from the farm-home; the bands had to ferry their gear from the trailers and vans in a 4 x 4, over various multiple trips, up to the concert site.

It took a good four or five hours to transport the gear, set-up the stage, prepare the PA, wire hte speakers, fuel the generators…basically create a show-worthy space in the middle of a forest.

As the bands checked sound, fiddled with the PA and hoped like hell the whole system wouldn't cack-out, the Crusties set up barriers and ropes to lead the soon-to-arrive folk from the road to the scene of the concert. Torches and oil lamps lit the path. As the sun went down, the landscape transformed into a beautiful and almost mystical environment…a mid-fall's night dream complete with full moon and people drinking home-made mead.

And somehow the people made it. One minute, there was an empty field with a stage, and suddenly, the place had at least 200 people standing around a massive bonfire, waiting for the bands to begin. And miraculously everything went smoothly. The gennies ran fine, the Pa worked like a charm and it sounded fucking amazing.

As Woves in the Throne Room took the stage and began tuning and preparing for their set, the majority of the crowd present swarmed the stage (the "stage" a few inches off the floor, and maybe 8 x 8 feet) and waited.

A few theatre pots lit the general area, and the bonfire provided some light too. I cranked my lens, a 1.8, wide open, jacked the iso on my camera and literally had to push and shove my way to the front of the stage. I crammed myself into a nook near a speaker and began filming. It was easily one of the best concerts I've ever been too, and I'm super proud of how the footage came out…what you see is what you get: intimate, crowded, dark with odd coloms of light. And under the stars and the moon a band in their prime, playing their hearts out.

"Ahrimanic Trance" from the album Black Cascade, Sept 9, 2011, Northfield VT.

i enjoyed your video and your review, very eloquent, its nice to read, i was stressed to the max and could only enjoy parts of the show. i just wanted to clear a few things up. first, hobby farm is an hideous insult, my family bought this land in 1830 and have been farming it for sustenance and barter for other goods ever since. im actually taking a little break from sugaring to write this, boiling down sap to create our sugar for the year. and its my parents land, the crust lords and metal heads just live in the woods and help with the farm work and work on projects of our own. a hobby farm is something rich people do at their summer homes to feel like they have an ounce of culture left in their husk of a body and to brag to their friends about how their horse likes carrots, imagine that. we didn't clear cut the field for the show, it was clear cut in the 1800's when most of vermont was clear cut and that section was left for grazing cattle and sheep. we had taken some trees down to build a barn, maybe thats where your confusion came from. we dont clear cut, we thin and only in a respectful, forestry and ecological conscious way in order to help the older trees stay healthy, to clear away diseased trees and to gather firewood or to build things with. i guess thats all that needed clarification. im glad you had fun, i did too, probley one of the best shows we've had to date. we've been having shows for the last four years, its really nice to have had everyone out last summer, now its raining and thundering out, sugaring is coming to a close and im thinking of whats next, farming, planning another epic show for late summer. the video is great, maybe you could send a DVD our way, my family would appreciate it. i think aarron knows how to get in touch. see you again some day, maybe? look forward to the next show at dead end farm. thanks to WITTR, THOU, FALLS OF RAUROS AND GRISTMILL. //mattchoo ps. this account, i just created to post this comment, dont try and respond to me on it.
