The Wednesday Sludge: DEVIL ELECTRIC Conjure The Riffs In 'Hypnotica'

Every week, Nic Huber dissects the heavy riffs of bands — new and old — in The Wednesday Sludge. This week's column focuses on an electric band from the land down under.

A lot of people sleep on Australia's metal scene, which has slowly started to change thanks in part to bands like Parkway Drive and Thy Art Is Murder. While those bands are certainly not worthy enough for this column, there are several rising Aussie bands that are.

Enter Melbourne-based Devil Electric, a four-piece rock n' roll band who understand heavy riffs match amazingly well with a stellar singing voice.

Devil Electric

Devil Electric signed to German label Kozmik Artifactz last year for the release of their upcoming eponymous debut album, which finally hits shelves August 11. The 37-minute, nine-track debut, will be released digitally and in three color variations on 180-gram vinyl, according to a press release the band emailed me.

That same release paints the band's lead single, 'Hypnotica,' as "a six and a half minute heavy-blues infused fuzzed-out jam that transports the mind into the swelling, darker depths of rock n’ roll."

Judging from the band's previous material, like "Holy Ghost" and Confusion of Mind," the band is definitely trudging their way to the forefront of occult rock. "Hypnotica" shows the band has matured to a level reminiscent of The Devil's Blood, with Devil Electric's thick riffs and doom-laden rhythms perfectly matching Pierina O'Brien's beautiful vocals.

Fronted by the gracious and haunting female presence of O’Brien, Devil Electric formed in mid-2015 to play spell-binding rock n' roll, according to the release. The quartet have performed all over Australia, supporting bands like Truckfighters and The Sword among others.

During a short email conversation I had with the band, Devil Electric told me an Australian tour is currently being booked for later this year and they are hoping to tour Europe in 2018.

Hopefully, they can get to North America at some point as this band looks very promising. Album pre-orders are available here.
