Well, some of the rumors were true. In what was basically the worst kept secret ever, The Dillinger Escape Plan have been announced as the headliners for this year's Summer Slaughter tour. BUT WHO ELSE?!

The yearly extreme metal festival is taking a much more shred-friendly twist this year with Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation and Aeon also locked in for the bill.

This in itself is an unfuckwithable lineup, and you can even vote for who opens the tour.

No word yet on tour dates or ticket sale announcements, but we will keep you posted.

If you don't like the music there's no need to have a hissy fit. This is a very good line up so far. Just because you don't love it doesn't mean you have to bash everything because your underground death metal bands didn't get first place this year.       I agree, the way the 'true metalheads" have expressed themselves exceeds the definition of "redundancy" in my mind, but they have a valid point.

      This tour is called the Summer SLAUGHTER tour. Common logic would lead you to believe that this tour would consist of much heavier bands (more along the lines of Cattle Decapitation, and Aeon) rather than The Dillinger Escape Plan, Periphery, and Animals As Leaders…

      Maybe an alternative tour, with more "djent" or "core" influenced artists would make the fans of that particular genre even happier, rather than taking the "Death Metal" out of a Death Metal festival, and replacing it with softer styles of music.

      You see, I have no problem with the bands. They aren't my taste of music, but I don't care if someone else enjoys their music… All I am saying is that there is no reason that this tour should be hijacked, so the owner of Sumerian Records (who also books this tour) can put his friends on the line up, and take away spots from bands that normally wouldn't get to play on a tour like this.

          They are definitely softer compared to other modern metal bands like Exhumed, Decrepit Birth, Jungle Rot, or Pathology. (not saying those bands should be on the line-up, just a point of reference).

          I'm not saying the Dillinger Escape Plan aren't heavy, or talented, I'm saying that that they don't come across as a super heavy band… They come off as more of a technical band.. Which isn't a bad thing in the least..

          It just leads me back to my original point that this tour would "be cooler" if it consisted of more "death metal" bands, hence the name, Summer Slaughter. I don't see any validity in using the term "summer slaughter" when the term itself is hardly even represented by the music. (I'm aware how awfully "dumb" that sounds, but using a word like "slaughter" isn't meant to provoke any new and breath-taking discoveries).

          The Dillinger Escape Plan, Periphery, and Animals As Leaders could do their own tour, with a bunch of other prog bands and it would be way more well received by fans… It's just so painfully obvious that picking this selection of bands for a tour entitled Summer Slaughter would cause a fuss, yet it happens time and time again…

          I'm well aware that most of us are able to enjoy all of these types of music. I am one of those people.. I just question the logic of these choices when it's so obvious that a few different choices could end up with such better results.

      a difference between being open minded and supporting shitty music.
      The underground is the key to the metal scene, has been for a long time
      and always will be, if you don't support the underground bands then why
      do you even bother trying to claim to be a fan of the genre? I'm not
      angry about this, I expected the lineup to be pretty awful, especially
      after last year's terrible lineup. I get that promoter's have to make
      money, and to do that they have to pull in the herd who support whatever
      new buzz band from the newest microgenre that's getting all the kids
      wetting their pants these days. As for me though, I have no problem
      crawling back in my "pretentious" hole supporting bands from all genres
      of metal that you've never even thought about listening to rather than paying to see the overrated and overhyped Periphery and Animals as Leaders.
      I'm not closed minded or TR00 KVLT because I don't want to see this
      show, it probably means I have more knowledge of and respect for the
      metal genre than you do to piss away my money on this so called
      slaughter. Aeon should be disappointed that they will play for 20 mins
      every night in front of a majority of people who have never heard Path

          I see what you are both saying, BUT saying that Periphery or Animals as Leaders are almost always more open minded than you is a bit of a stretch. They sometimes look down upon people who play "easy death metal." Yet, death metal takes alot of dexterity and is a bit more to the point than the cool, technicality of those previously mentioned bands. I also happen to like these bands as well.

    Periphery and Animals As Leaders again? C'mon, I mean I know the guy who runs Sumerian also books this tour, but putting these two bands on this tour for the last few years is getting really old. Nothing but a cash grab on their behalf… And I usually wouldn't have a problem with something like that, since it's just business.. (and it's still really just a big independent business, so that's cool)… I'm just more confused at the fact that neither of those bands have gotten big enough to headline… Why do they keep getting so many chances if they're never going to break from the "mid-level" of success? Obviously I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being on the "mid-level", I just don't know why the spots are pretty much reserved for these two bands…. Oh well, if it were Arsis or Vektor I probably wouldn't complain…

      Periphery and AAL have the unique position of being "too wild and experimental" for the mainstream and "too subdued" and "overdone" for those that are more experience in the underground. It's why they are mid-level. Kinda difficult for them to breakout.

        Periphery have everything it takes to become a successful modern band beyond the "metal" genre. Clean vocals, catchy riffs, and a slick image that the younger generation seems to eat right up… Yet for some reason, it's not taking off.

        The "they are to experimental for the mainstream" excuse hasn't held any water for any prog/experimental band since RUSH started selling out arena's back in the day. If their music were truly memorable, they would have a much larger fan-base given the connections they have. (The guy who gave them a record deal is also responsible for booking them into so many well-known tours… Which is a luxury that most independent bands could only dream of)

        Once again, I am not saying "smaller bands" are not as important, I'm merely stating that a band that has been given as many opportunities as Periphery should be much larger by now.

          What are you talking about? Periphery is doing amazingly well right now, sure they aren't played in top 20 countdowns on mtv or whatever but that doesn't mean anything. No new bands these days sell out stadiums dipshit, the industry and volume of other artist has completely changed. The newest bands i can think of are Nickelback and Linkin Park, and they're the last of the few bands left that can do that.

            Periphery have barely gotten their feet wet in the steaming puddle of piss which is the modern music industry.

            I can name far too many modern bands that are more successful than Periphery that have had less chances to "make it big".

            Periphery are teamed with a very competent record label and powerful booking agency, but they have yet to achieve any success outside the small underground metal world which we all know. I'm in no way insulting them when I saw that, just making a non-biased observation.

            Quick example: Back in the late 80's/early 90's Metallica just started to headline arena's by themselves. That was an unthinkable barrier to break… We have to remember in the early days they were a completely different machine than what we know today… If you looked at what was on the radio at that time you had: tons of 70's bands going through terrible phases, new electronic music, and teeny-bopper sappy love bullshit.

            If they were able to push there way through that and play the first 4 albums in front of over 15,000 people every night on the road, without ANY mainstream coverage or promotion (before they went corporate), I think Periphery should be able to put a dent in the scene given their musical ability and ample chances with so many huge bands.

            Maybe the scene is satisfied with the "legends" that are still touring, and won't allow for newer bands to "get that big"…Will there ever be another "memorable" band?.. (all argument aside, that's a pretty weird thought if you think about it).

    Alright, beyond Opeth, Deathspell Omega, Quo Vadis, Gorguts, Anata, and Ulcerate, when has modern(ish) death metal been "good" or groundbreaking?*
    -Aeon has some solid musicians, but the vocalist sounds like he's gurgling semen.
    -Revocation has a nice Extol sound to them, but both bands seem to have a heavier thrash and groove influence to them. Death metal? If you say so…
    -Cattle Decap is meh at best.

    Seeing the rampant douce-baggery of these comments prompted me to post some perspective to you jerk-offs….

    While I can completely understand the "purists" on here, and being a fan of Cattle Decap, AND *GASP* Animals as Leaders at the same time, I can say with absolute certainty that this years SS Tour is not as "deathy" as it used to be. That being said, who Deicided (let's see how many of you queers picked up on what I did there) that the tour must be tailored to the purists. You think you're infallible when it comes to music taste and what constitutes real metal, when in reality metal is (within reason) whatever we want it to be. Now we can't go adding some o/d or distortion to a Justin Bieber song and call it metal, but let's be serious. What is it we like about metal? The intensity, the raw aggressive emotion, the things it makes us feel.

    I for one, would consider AAL more musically talented from a technique perspective than most metal bands around today, and most that have come before them. Personally I get bored as fuck listening to Dying Fetus because it's the same shit over and over again, albeit brutal. Blast beat, speed riff a couple times, blast beat, chugs to a fast double bass pedal, speed riif, rinse and repeat. But hey if that's what tickles your prostate, then great…. headbang to your little hearts content. If your argument is that there is no talent in more modern metal, than take your head and your dick out of your ass and smell the smelling salts.

    And lastly, if you don't want to go to the SS tour because the bands headlining it aren't jammed into your narrow-as-fuck idea as to what metal is, then stay the fuck home and let the real metal fans enjoy the bands that make them feel the same way that Fetus, Cerebral Bore, Opeth, Necrophagist, and any other underground shit you're into makes you feel.

    Sure, the line up isn't that great for a Summer Slaughter Tour, but its still a pretty good line up in my opinion. The reason the tour is progressively getting less brutal is because they're trying to bring more money in from it, so they figure the core bands are the best way to do so. I mean, they're certainly gonna get my money if they come anywhere near my city xD

    Well I really don't understand these comments at all. I've seen people bash Periphery and AAL for not deserving their acclaimed fame and some bash the whole genre of music they're playing. First of all, Periphery has the most talented musicians I've seen in my life. Tosin Abasi, AAL guitarist, is an insanely talented guitarist who is nothing to sneeze at. They deserve their positions in this lineup. Also, a lot of these bands play similar genres of music, Progressive or Technical Metal. That's why this is the lineup. A lot of these bands are the best upcoming bands in this genre. If you're against an entire sub genre of metal, you're more close minded than I thought possible for people listening to an underground genre of music. It's not as if this genre is less more. If anything it's more metal. It's the most complex and talented sub genre of metal in my opinion.

    I really don't think everyone has to support every obscure band that I do, although it would be nice if more people who claim to love metal would make a real effort to dig into the metal underground a lot more than they actually do (I don't necessarily mean anyone here specifically). It just troubles me that this is the lineup that is considered "extreme." The fact that a solid band like Aeon is supporting sucks, because they should be getting way more time on stage than Norma Jean or Periphery. But so many people, like a lot of you here, would much rather lend your support to the headliners thus building their popularity so the promoters do what they have to do to sell some tix because they don't give a fuck who goes to these things. That's what I mean when I talk about disrespect to the genre…4 or 5 of these bands clearly don't belong on an extreme metal tour, but because of all the "open minded" fans on this thread they end up taking away slots from bands that MOST extreme metal fans would actually want to pay to see. It's really disappointing for metalheads like myself who look forward to seeing an extreme show, we get alienated, while the hot topic shoppers and Revolver readers get catered to and then they insult us by throwing a solid band or two in a terrible timeslot. Not to mention most fans of a band like Periphery criticize us and call us closed minded even though I guarantee a lot of you have never picked up a Bethlehem, Lifelover, Rotten Sound, Pest, Sarcofago or Gomorrah (all completely different styles of metal) album in your life. Next year I look forward to Gorguts or Terrorizer playing 2nd and 3rd fiddles to Black Veil Brides or Asking Alexandria or some other piece of shit band that I'm sure all the open minded people here enjoy. If you don't, it's not very open minded now is it? You'll all bitch and whine about me being kvlt or tr00 after this post, so I guess you're all just as predictable as I am. Put on your deep V's kids and enjoy the so-called slaughter…on the extreme metal scene.

    I must say, Summer Slaughter hasn't let me down until this year. This is my one day every year where heavy bands come together and play for brutal people. I fear that this year, not only will there be a lack of a heavy sound across the board, but this show may attract a crowd that doesn't embody the true Summer Slaughter spirit. I don't have a problem with any of these bands by themselves, but I had really hoped that for THIS tour, some of them (especially the headliner) would have been left behind. It is also a shame that the bands that truly belong on this tour are overshadowed by those who do not. I look forward to this show every year, and this year is no different. I only hope that next year, this will not happen again.

    This is certainly an eclectic lineup, though I'll admit I'm mainly gonna go to see Revocation and (hopefully) Rings of Saturn. While the overall lineup doesn't exactly scream "SLAUGHTER", Animals as Leaders and Dillinger Escape Plan should be quite interesting, which promises a fun time. Especially in SF

    I would fly from Australia to see this tour. The only band I don't like in this initial line up is Norma Jean and I've never heard them so I couldn't say I HATE them either. I feel sorry for you dudes at feeling the need to complain about whom ISN'T on the tour if you can't celebrate the ones that are. Poor spoiled fellows.
