Stone Temple Pilots' reunion is going full steam ahead with new vocalist, former American Idol and The X Factor contestant Jeff Gutt. In a new interview with Billboard.com, guitarist Dean DeLeo says that the band would not be moving forward if there weren't any new music.

According to DeLeo, the new music is exactly what fans have come to expect from STP, as it "goes from acoustic-based, beautiful things to really hard-hitting, heavy moments" That's the reason they are touring:

“If there wasn’t new music I don’t know that we’d really have a leg to stand on, but we’re sitting on 14 new songs right now. We wanted to have that ability to create new music and to go on and make more records and more music that we can just pile into the STP canon.”

Oddly, DeLeo noted that he felt slighted before in the creative process by working with Weiland, so it's a pleasure working with Gutt. Seems like an odd comparison, seeing as though Weiland has been dead for two years:

“I felt like I was slighted with Scott. As great as he was, my entire life was two steps forward and three steps back. So I’ll tell you, it was a real pleasure to be able to write and record a record under these circumstances [with Gutt.] It’s something I haven’t experienced in decades, so this feels great.”
