Dave Bowie did not play heavy metal, but you would be a fool to think he didn't have a massive influence on the genre. Beyond the superifical influence he may have had on glam metal, the man was an artist in the purest form. He was ultimately always himself, never trying to appease anybody and his spirit no doubt influenced many of the musicians you listen to today.

You don't have to take my word for it. Tributes have been pouring out since the announcement late last night, that Bowie died after an 18 month battle with cancer. Here is a roundup of metal musicians and some rock musicians showing their love to one of the greats:

Yesterday I woke up with some loved ones and had breakfast to the sounds of Blackstar. I had no idea that he was passing or had recently left this earth. It was a heavy day. Something was wrong. For the first time in months I felt like I had no light in me. But this album was not his final gift. His music, and persona will live on. Aliens and creatures of the future will study Bowie as an example of what mankind was capable of long after we have destroyed every last trace of humanity. I chose to post this more recent photo of Bowie because of how grateful I am for his continuous inspiration, and innovation even during these final days on this earth. He is proof that a person can truly be immortal. "This way or no way / You know I'll be free / Just like that bluebird / Now, ain't that just like me?" #tribute #davidbowie #bowie
