We asked Metal Injection contributor Frank Huang to reflect on his Top 5 Shows in 2011. Frank shot extensive video of all the shows mentioned in this post, as well as many other NYC area shows, which you can view at Pit Full of Shit. (more…)
It's almost Labor Day weekend, and without a doubt, the best part about this particular weekend for me will be seeing Sleep, another band in a long string of bands I thought I would never see live. The above clip, which I found on the show announcement page is basically what sealed the seal for me. Not because the clip is of stellar quality, it's probably just some dude with a digital camera or something. No. What made this awesome is the level of distortion in the audio. The feeble camera mic cannot handle the epic sounds being produced by Matt Pike & co. I want to say I have an idea of how loud it will be in the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Monday, but I think I am in for a big surprise. I need to remember my earplugs for this one.
As the icing on the cake, motherfuckin' Doomriders are direct support. Doomriders! A band I have been gushing about to anybody in earshot (and even to frontman Nate Newton himself) for the last year. If you like rock and roll music, there is no way you cannot appreciate Doomriders. On top of those two great bands, local doom favorites Unearthly Trance will kick things off in style.
So after you are done grilling your burgers, drinking them brewskies and smoking those doobs, hop on the train or get in your car and head on over. Tickets are still available at Ticketweb
Chicago grind freaks HARPOON are gearing up for a week-long mini-tour that will see them puncturing their Midwestern safety bubble and taking their intense live show on the road. They'll be starting things off with a bang (or, more likely, a very, very heavy "ohhhhhhhhhm") supporting hooded drone druids SUNN 0))), then continuing eastward towards the coast. Along the way, they'll be supporting the aforementioned SUNN O))) , EAGLE TWIN, THE HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA, UNEARTHLY TRANCE, 7000 DYING RATS, LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR and more. Don't miss these guys when they hit your city – they're guaranteed to damn near tear your face off with their merciless hypergrind. Dates after the jump… (more…)
Holy fuck! Somebody had the brilliant idea to get a bunch of stonery doomy sludge bands to cover a bunch of PINK FLOYD songs, arguably the greatest stoner band ever. The project is being called Like Black Holes in the Sky: The Tribute to Syd Barrett, and features covers by JESU, INTRONAUT, KYLESA, DREDG, UNEARTHLY TRANCE, YAKUZA and more.
Really, its a who's who of awesome bands covering (in this humble blogger's opinion) the awesomest band of all time. The fine people at Dwell Records have posted a player streaming this amazing CD in its entirety. Listen to this compilation in all of its awesomeness, after the jump… (more…)

The madmen behind Maryland’s goriest, circlepittiest, most blastbeat-engulfed metal festival have announced plans to include a second stage, featuring a proposed lineup of fifty (count ‘em, fifty!) crazy-awesome bands. Ten have already been announced, with many more to come.
Worried about being forced to make that agonizing choice between your favorite band and your other favorite band that the conflicting time schedules at so many festivals thrust upon us poor patrons? No worries, Ryan and Evan’ve got your back.
According to the festival organizers, “Bands that will perform on the second stage will not be scheduled to start until a band finishes playing on the main stage. This will allow every band on the second stage to play for at least 15-20 minutes when no other band is playing, not to mention many of the bands on the second stage won't need much more than 20 minutes to play.”
The first ten second stage acts will include:
Kill the Client (Texas)
Magrudergrind (Washington DC)
Lair of the Minotaur (Illinois)
Unearthly Trance (New York)
The Endless Blockade (Canda)
Car Bomb (New York)
Weekend Nachos (Illinois)
Drugs of Faith (Maryland)
