Drew Zalucky's 10 Favorite Albums of 2011
Not too long ago, I went over to Double-Down Saloon to celebrate Frank’s birthday with the rest of the crew from Metal Injection and MetalSucks. Amidst the smoke and the booze, there was one obvious question I had to ask everyone: what were some of your favorite records of 2011? Having posted their lists a couple weeks ago, I already knew what some of the MetalSucks people thought. More interesting however was my conversation with the boys about the validity of “Top Lists” in general. Some of them considered the whole exercise pointless. While I understand their reasons, I still like countdowns and “best-of” lists simply for their informative value. If you admire the opinion of a certain writer, maybe their list would be worth reading. I’ve found out about countless artists from such lists, artists who have then turned into favorites or opened doors for others. So if anything, I hope this list can serve that purpose for you.

TOXIC HOLOCAUST & HAVOK Hit The Road
Toxic Holocaust and Havok are two "re-thrash" bands that I can certainly get behind, especially live. Both bands know how to bring the party atmosphere to the stage, and leave many attendees with serious cases of whiplash due to all their headbanging. You could experience it for yourself when they head out on the road with The Casualties and English Dogs. Here are the dates: (more…)

CD Review: TOXIC HOLOCAUST Conjure and Command
I generally try to shy away from direct band comparisons, unless the antecedents were such blatant influences that to ignore them would be to admit sheer ignorance. A band like Toxic Holocaust, however, practically dares you not to mention their allegiance to Bay Area thrash and mid-80's proto-black metal, and even though they're chugging along into album number four with solid results, there is still little evidence of the band actually coming into their own. A/V Roundup: New Music from PUSCIFER, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, STRAY FROM THE PATH, WILL HAVEN and more
It's Tuesday morning and I'm hung over. Probably shouldn't have smoked all those blunts last night, huh? Anyway, here is the music getting me through today:
For those of you eager for new TOOL material, uhh… Puscifer released a new track. Exciting right? Maynard can finish two albums before TOOL even gets one out the door. It's pretty much more of the same Pusicfer you heard before, sorta dancy hard rock. Take a listen to their first single "Man Overboard", off their sophmore album, Conditions of My Parole, out October 18. (more…)

Metal Up Your Ass: TGINSPDA (Thank God It's Not St. Patty's Day Anymore) Edition
There is a lot to be frustrated about today. The pope still thinks that condoms worsens the spreading of AIDS. A bunch of bumbling morons still wearing their kelly green t-shirts are hungover and more dangerous than yesterday. AND K-Rock ditched the bullshit hard rock to play Beyonce all day (I didn't believe it until I turned the radio on in my car on yesterday). But, at least the internet is as cool as a Nordic winter, with all its information sharing. So chill out and click away.
SIDE PROJECT ALERT
Celan, another Unsane spinoff, has material coming out soon but for now you can check out their myspace
BIZARRE NEWS SHARE OF THE DAY
Japanese metallers Dir En Grey will be conducting "careful" confirmations that only dudes are attending their "male only" concerts, which leads me to believe that members of the band will finally show their vaginas on stage.
APPEARANCES
IHSAHN (ex-Emperor) performed at an Opeth show, while Opeth guest vocalist Nathalie Lorichs performed with Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple
Revolver announces it's Hottest Chick in Metal for May and a former inductee (Marta of Bleeding Through) posts an interview with Hard Times
Anthrax' Frankie Bello swears up a storm on "That Metal Show" and chooses Van Halen over GnR
AWESOME
Agoraphobic Nosebleed "Moral Distortion" plus album art
TOURS+SHOWS
A shitload of tour dates were announced: Psyopus, Unholy, Made Out of Babies, A Life Once Lost, Burning Human, Napalm Death (with Toxic Holocaust), MISERY INDEX
Local events to note:
Brooklyn Black and Blue Hardcore show to ensue a massive mosh pit on May 30
A beard party (includes Slumlord, Returner and Electric Horsemen) is being thrown by Decibel on 3/18 (THAT'S TODAY)
Going to SXSW? Well, fuck you! Well, not really, I'm just a tad jealous. But, I still got your backs. Here are two guides: one from Brooklyn Vegan and one from Metal Sucks [dot net]

NAPALM DEATH, KATAKLYSM, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, TRAP THEM: Tour dates announced
Right on the heels of Time Waits for No Slave, their umpteenth offering of face-melting grindcore, England's extreme metal pioneers NAPALM DEATH are marauding through North America with a none-too-shabby supporting cast. KATAKLSYM, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, TRAP THEM and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS are sure to fulfill all your death/thrash/grind metal needs, while Napalm Death promise to be as nice as possible about handing you your ass. New England Metal & Hardcore Fest is included in the tour, and Maryland Death Fest will also feature some of the same bands in May. Dates are as follows: (more…)
