Ready, Set, FIGHT!
by: Frank Godla
FUCK YES!! I'm always surprised to learn many people either never heard of Fight, or simply never got hip to it. That's understandable though, maybe balls to the wall crushing metal with top notch musicians, and one of the best front men known in the genre's history may not be your thing… but that doesn't make you less naive.
The year was 1993, mainstream metal was only getting lighter and weaker across the U.S. when ex-Judas Priest front man Rob Halford announced he'd be making a come back with a new younger band, and a more direct approach. His last effort with Priest then was Painkiller, an LP that was as epic then as it is now. So needless to say the metal community was both eager and worried to see what Halford had in store. Most critics claimed he'll never be able to release something as heavy as Painkiller again, and it's simply not where metal is anymore. Wow were they wrong! (more…)
CD review: LORDI, Babez for Breakfast
LORDI look like GWAR. Now that that's out of the way, remember that originality is overrated, and that being a pioneer doesn't necessarily mean being the high standard. Judged on its own, Lordi's music is exactly what it should be–stoopid, basic, catchy hard rock with song titles that were probably taken from JOEY DEMAIO's notebook. The Finnish metal beasts' fifth album, Babez for Breakfast, isn't quite up to the comedy metal of Gwar or STEEL PANTHER, and it's nowhere near as idiosyncratic as their best labelmates on The End. But I bet it sounds awesome when performed by pyro-happy monsters. (more…)

Comedy Central greenlights STEEL PANTHER faux-reality show pilot

I have seen Steel Panther perform live twice and even got the chance to interview them last year, and these dudes get it. A lot of people say they can't get into the band's music, but honestly, that's not even their best assett. Seeing the band live, you don't only see them go through a bunch of 80's covers, you see them deliver the most hilarious metal-based stand up comedy around. They just have really good comic timing. And that's ultimately what sells me on them. So, when I was reading a press release that Comedy Central issued detailing their upcoming year of production I was excited to see that the band sold the channel on a pilot based on their schtick. And you'll never guess who's producing it: (more…)
