Drew Zalucky's 25 Best of 2012 List
2012 will not see end of the world, or extreme music for that matter. However, if this was the end of Metal and Hardcore as we know it, the year 2012 would make quite a grand finale. So many great records came out this year that I decided to stretch this article to a more obnoxious comprehensive list of 25. If it weren’t for the amazing power of Spotify, I don’t know how I would have kept up. As with my list last year, this list is unordered, as agonizing over competing slots for #9 and #10 would miss the point of the exercise. The point being: out of all the music I heard this year, the records listed below represent what I enjoyed the most. I hope some readers get some benefit from seeing this list and check out some records they may have missed, or that others will have some to name that I may have overlooked myself.
By the way, if you have Spotify you should check out my Best of 2012 Playlist, or the shorter 2012 Sampler! (more…)

MASTODON's Troy Sanders Is Joining MAX CAVALERA's Supergroup with GREG PUCIATO
This supergroup just got more super. On the 100th edition of the Metal Injection Livecast, The Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato revealed exclusively to us that he and Soulfly's Max Cavalera are going to be collaborating on a project reminiscent of Cavalera's work in Nailbomb. We've written a lot about it in the past, and today we get another update and this one is huge!
Max Cavalera was recently interviewed and said that Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders has joined the project. (more…)

Max Cavelera Says It's 'An Honor' To Play "Gathering Of The Juggalos"
In case you missed it yesterday, we told you that Soulfly and Fear Factory would be performing at this year's Gathering of the Juggalos. According to Roadrunner Records website, the label seems pretty happy that Soulfly is the first RR band to perform for the 'notoriously volatile juggalo audience'. In the article, Roadrunner included this quote from Max: (more…)
SOULFLY And FEAR FACTORY Confirmed For ICP's 'Gathering Of The Juggalos'
Two ICP stories in just as many days? What is going on? I'm quite confused and concerned. Last week, I got an email from a publicist announcing a bunch of new Soulfly dates, with one of those being at Insane Clown Posse's Gathering of the Juggalos in August. I was pretty shocked, and I knew Soulfly wouldn't be the only good band announced. I just had a gut feeling. Now, Fear Factory has also been confirmed. Money is money, and it's interesting that the promoters of the Juggafest are taking such an interest in metal this year, when the most extreme act to play the usually hip-hop-loaded event in previous years was Gwar. Will there be more metal band announcements in the coming weeks? We'll keep you posted.

MAX CAVALERA Reveals More Info About Side Project with GREG PUCIATO; Once Puked On Eddie Vedder
Max Cavlera is out promoting his band, Soulfly's new album Enslaved and in the process, naturally, interviewers are going to be asking about the much-talked about collaboration with Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato, which coicindentally was first brought up when Puciato called into the Metal Injection Livecast last year. It's been a minute since we've heard any new info, but Max really opened the flood gates, in a recent interview with Loud magazine, revealing the music is written and also revealing some interesting other musicians being added to this "Nailbomb 2" project: (more…)

Some SOULFLY For Your Lunch Break? Yes, Please
Another new Soulfly song has surfaced (above) from their new album, Enslaved and much like "World Scum," it's a pretty crushing track. Am I actually looking forward to a Soulfly release? I don't remember the last time I felt this way. The new album is out this Tuesday, March 13th, so we'll see if the rest of it holds up.

MAX CAVALERA Recovers From Bells Palsy
Well this sucks. Last week, Max Cavelera's wife noticed the Soulfly frontman's face "looked weird." Upon looking into a mirror, Max realized he couldn't move half his face and initially the fear was that he had suffered a stroke, but it was Bell's Palsy, a condition that results in the inability to control facial muscles. Thankfully, he was put on antibiotic, and has improved his condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. Here is a statement Max released concerning this health scare: (more…)

SOULFLY Set To Release Enslaved In Early 2012
Max Cavalera does not sleep. In the last four years, he has released four new albums, both with Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy. Next year will mark the fifth consecutive year that he puts out new music, this time under the Soulfly moniker. Roadrunner Records announced today that Soulfly will be releasing their eighth album, Enslaved on March 13, 2012. The album was produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris at Tallcat Studios in Phoenix, Arizona. (more…)

Max Cavalera/Greg Puciato Callabo Still On; There Are Demos!
Remember a few months ago when Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato revealed to us that he was talking with Max Cavalera about collaboration. Well, it's moving full speed ahead. While us east-coasters were suffering Irene's wrath this weekend, Puciato was in the desert in Pheonix at Max's studio demoing some material. He posted the following update on his personal Facebook page: (more…)

Now Andreas Is Cool With A SEPULTURA Reunion?

Holy shit, Andreas, I can't believe you! Let's do a quick recap: About a year ago, news surfaced that Max Cavalera wanted to reunite the original Sepultura lineup but Andreas refused/resisted. Then Max kept talking shit about Sepultura and how Paolo is old. We giggled a bit. Finally, last month, the current incarnation of the band released a video saying there was no reunion and Sepultura as is will tour throughout 2011. Fine, we thought. We can all move on with our lives. That was until somebody decided to interview Andreas about the possibility of the reunion and he backpedaled. (more…)

Get your first taste of SOULFLY's Omen
Max Cavalara and crew have been really kind to let us into their studio, submitting some studio reports and the latest one is the best yet. We hear Max recording the chorus to one of the tracks, "Bloodbath and Beyond", as well as previews of contributions from Tommy Victor (PRONG) and Greg Puciato (DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN). From what I hear, this shit sounds killer. I look forward to hearing the finished product when it comes out in early 2010. For now we have this update…
