That Steve Wilson/Mikael Akerfedlt Collaboration Barely Features Drums, No Distorted Guitars
We're pretty excited about this long-awaited collaboration between The Porcupine Tree's Steve Wilson and Opeth's Mikael Akerfedlt called Storm Corrosion. When we interviewed Wilson a few months ago, he said it would be a natural evolution from his recent solo outing, and Opeth's last release, Heritage. The collaboration would act as the final piece in the trilogy. He further clarified about how not-metal this album would be in a recent chat, stating: (more…)

Dates Announced For OPETH, MASTODON, GHOST Spring 2012 Tour
We are oh-so-excited for this forthcoming tour package which will see Opeth team up with Mastodon and Ghost for a trek all around North America. I can't think of a more appropriate tour package for all of the bands involved. I am very rarely elated for a bill from top to bottom and this is most certainly one of those times. It all kicks off on April 4th in Portland, ME, goes across the US (with a few stops in Canada) and wraps up on May 12th in Atlanta. Here is the full routing: (more…)

MASTODON Confirm They Will Be Touring With OPETH & GHOST
YESSSSS!!!! A few weeks ago we reported on rumors that Mastodon, Opeth and Ghost might be touring together and that it HAD to happen and if it did, I would jizz myself. Well, it'a definitely happening… somebody hand me some tissues!
In a recent interview, the 'don's Troy Sanders confirmed that they will be headlining a tour with Opeth and Ghost in tow. Having just seen Ghost last week, I cannot wait to experience their amazing live show as well. Top to bottom this is a huge bill, and already a frontrunner for tour of the year. As soon as we have dates, you will hear about them!

If This MASTODON, OPETH, GHOST Tour Rumor Is True, I'm Going To Jizz Myself
This is a rumor I really want to believe. Blabbermouth reported over the weekend that they are hearing that Mastodon, Opeth and Ghost are teaming up for a Spring tour. Holy fucking shit, if that's not a prog metal fans wet dream, I really don't know what is. Maybe if you add TOOL on top of all of this it could be better, but other than that this is a perfect three-bill combo and it just makes sense. (more…)

Kit Brown's Top 10 Favorite Albums of 2011
It's been a pretty kick ass year for metal. A lot of great follow ups from established bands, a few new surprises, and plenty of riffs. This list is organized in reverse order. Hope you enjoy! (more…)

Atanamar's Top 10 LP's of 2011
In 2011 my attention span left the building. I lost interest in anything slower than a barreling freight train, and my enjoyment of the funereal frittered out. I didn't dig much in the way of doom, and sludge just didn’t move me like it used to. My tolerance of inexpert clean vocals completely evaporated. I realized this year that I'd rather wear a gas mask than appreciate “atmosphere.” Give me riffs or give me death. But really, just give me death metal. (more…)

OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt Addresses His Lack of Growling
One of the main critisisms of Opeth's new record, Heritage and their recent string of live performance is the absence of frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt's signature growl. There's none at all! Personally, I do not mind it, because I love Opeth and accept them for who they are and whatever vision they choose to go with. But there has been enough negative feedback that Akerfeldt decided to address the drama when asked if he would ever growl again on an Opeth record: (more…)

OPETH & KATATONIA Played BLOODBATH Songs On Last Night of Tour
Baltimore, MD, you lucky motherfuckers! The Opeth/Katatonia tour was winding down at the Ram's Head, at what was the final stop of the tour on Tuesday, November 2nd and as a special treat for the fans in attendance, and for shits and giggles, the members of both of those bands that comprise the amazing death metal side project Bloodbath came out for a two song encore, concluding with an incredible rendition of their hit, "Eaten." To say I am incredibly jealous that I didn't get to see this at the NY stop is an understatement. We just got a lot of pretty Opeth songs, but I really wanted some nasty Bloodbath tracks. Now if you excuse me, I have to go listen to all of Bloodbath's discography.

OPETH's Heritage Streaming In Full
Opeth's fantastic new release, Heritage (which we reviewed last week) is now streaming in full over at NPR's site. The album features no gutteral vocals, only clean singing (sometimes crooning) but the multi-faceted frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt. The album features a ton of great keyboard as well. Look, it's fucking Opeth…of course it's going to rule. Head on over to NPR to hear the whole thing then come back and tell us what you think.

Start The Day With Some New OPETH
I'm loving what I've heard so far of the new Opeth record. Between the above track and hearing "The Devil's Orchard", this new proggy all-clean vocals stuff is really winning me over. I thought I'd be bothered by the lack of gutturals, but I am not. I can't wait for Heritage!

New OPETH Track! New OPETH Track! New OPETH Track!
UPDATE: Here is a working link Here is the official high quality link.
I am not sure if you can sense my excitement with the title, but today we get our first taste of what the new Opeth album will sound like. One kind soul has ripped "The Devil's Orchard" off the radio and posted it to Youtube. Listen in before it's too late and it gets removed. Don't expect any growls or anything, all clean vocals from here on out. It's Opeth in all their proggy glory. I'm a fan, I think you'll like it too. Their new album, Heritage comes out September 16th.

More Dates Revealed for OPETH/KATATONIA Tour
We got really excited last week when the first dates surfaced for this Fall's Opeth/Katatonia tour. There were some junkies who were a little upset that Opeth weren't coming to their neck of the woods. Well, a ton more tour dates have surfaced so many you shouldn't be so upset. And, if they're not coming to your town, maybe it's time you pack your things and move to a more major market? Just sayin'. Here are the newly announced dates: (more…)
