Best of 2012

Drew Zalucky's 25 Best of 2012 List

Metal-Injection-Best-of-2012

2012 will not see end of the world, or extreme music for that matter. However, if this was the end of Metal and Hardcore as we know it, the year 2012 would make quite a grand finale. So many great records came out this year that I decided to stretch this article to a more obnoxious comprehensive list of 25. If it weren’t for the amazing power of Spotify, I don’t know how I would have kept up. As with my list last year, this list is unordered, as agonizing over competing slots for #9 and #10 would miss the point of the exercise. The point being: out of all the music I heard this year, the records listed below represent what I enjoyed the most. I hope some readers get some benefit from seeing this list and check out some records they may have missed, or that others will have some to name that I may have overlooked myself.

By the way, if you have Spotify you should check out my Best of 2012 Playlist, or the shorter 2012 Sampler! (more…)

JOEY 'FINGERS' LOMBARD

Yet another one bites the dust. The first major metal-related death of this year, coming a few weeks just after the  tragic death of David Gold (Woods Of Ypres) last year/month, the person in question was Incantation's last lead bassist to appear on the last Incantation studio album, Primordial Domination (2006). Here's the news from Blabbermouth.net: (more…)

Live Review: INCANTATION, MORTICIAN – November 20th – Europa, Brooklyn

By Atanamar SunyataIncantation Hall of Fame Flyer

Incantation's debut album unleashed a miasmal, doom-drenched vision of death metal upon an unsuspecting world in 1992.  When Decibel Magazine inducted Onward to Golgotha into their Hall of Fame last year, the album received the accolades I always felt it deserved.  This summer, Decibel announced a brief tour celebrating the iconic album; there was no way I'd miss a chance to see Onward to Golgotha performed in its entirety.

For me, listening to Incantation evokes hazy memories of college glory.  For several years, Onward to Golgotha was part of an absurd rotation of death metal albums that accompanied 40 ounce bottles of malt liquor and prefaced drunken nights in dive bars.  Like most of those addled evenings, Incantation’s Hall of Fame gig in Brooklyn was fun while it lasted, but ultimately it ended in ignominious defeat.  Although this show teetered on the brink of disaster, I'll remember the night as an unholy victory.

Fuck Yes! Tour Dates

MARYLAND DEATH FEST 2010 – First Bands Announced

HALLELUJAH! Only a few weeks after the three-day slaughterfest that was MDF 2009, the madmen behind the whole thing (Ryan and Evan) have announced the initial lineup and dates for next year's edition.

The festival will take place from May 28th to May 30th, with venue information to be released at a later date. The first bands to be confirmed are as follows:

ENTOMBED / OBITUARY / PENTAGRAM / EYEHATEGOD / SINISTER / INCANTATION / PORTAL / HAEMORRHAGE / IMPALED / GRIDLINK / INGROWING / GRIDE / MASSGRAVE / 16 / BIRDS OF PREY / FUCK THE FACTS / TOMBS / HOWL

Start planning your trip down there NOW-  judging from the massive success and insanely stacked lineup of the 2009 edition, this one's going to be an absolute behemoth. I'm dying to see how they'll top this year's lineup – they've already got Eyehategod, Entombed, and Pentagram, so I'm going to sit back and hope they can convince Hellhammer or Nihilist to reform and play a few tunes. Wishful thinking? Almost definitely, but hey, a girl can dream. Check out some of the five million videos Metal Injection has from MDFs past, and get STOKED.
