CD review: DOOMRIDERS, Darkness Come Alive

By Ben Apatoff
It may not be fair to compare DOOMRIDERS to guitarist/vocalist NATE NEWTON's better known day job, but Darkness Come Alive delivers on everything a side project should be. Almost none of the songs sound fit for the breakneck pace of CONVERGE's albums, but they're all strong enough to justify a separate band and tour.

A/V Roundup: New music from BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, CONVERGE, CHILDREN OF BODOM, HORSE THE BAND & more
So much great new music, so little time! No talk, just play:
VictoryMetal.com has posted a stream of a brand new song from BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME called "Obfuscation". In a bit of a dick move, they ask for you to enter your email address before hearing the stream, but here's the hot tip: put it a fake email address and you'll get access no problem! You're welcome. Listen here. Their new CD, The Great Misdirect is out October 27th.
I was lucky enough to hear a stream of the new CONVERGE album, and suffice to say it kicks fucking ass. Seriously. It's really really good, and I wasn't really the biggest CONVERGE fan before. Lucky for you, the band have posted the title track off their new CD, Axe To Fall for free download at SPIN. I implore you to download it and proceed to destroy your desk from the sheer rage the music will bring upon you.
CHILDREN OF BODOM have posted two tracks from their upcoming covers album, Skeletons in the Closet, on their MySpace page. The covers posted were of Billy Idol's classic "Rebel Yell" and the 80's most underrated band, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES' "War Inside My Head". The cover album comes out September 23rd.
HORSE THE BAND have posted a new track called "Rape Escape" on Lambgoat and it's pretty awesome. Lots of synth which if done right, is not a bad thing (unlike with Attack Attack)
With possibly the best song title out of all of these entries, AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE (the Ahhnuld-inspired project from AS I LAY DYING frontman Tim Lambesis) has posted the track "I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, And Your Motorcycle" on their MySpace page.
MetalSucks is hosting an exclusive stream of a THE DESTRO track called "Persistance of Ignorance"

The most metal moment of last night's Video Music Awards

Last night I watched suffered through the Video Music Awards. I figured I'd watch MUSE and see how terrible the state of pop music was, but mostly I watched because I was a masochist. There was nothing metal about the night except for one of the dudes from FALL OUT BOY wearing a Deathwish Inc shirt, the record label of CONVERGE frontman Jacob Bannon. We all know the band listens to metal, even do PANTERA covers sometimes.
So yea, that was the most "metal" thing that night. Well, Jack Black came out and did some dumb prayer to Satan, but it was dumb. Naturally, we embedded it if you want to torture yourself. It's after the jump… (more…)

DETHKLOK release new video, add dates with MASTODON
To be br00tally honest, I wasn't really anticipating Deathalbum II this month (did anyone think the second season of Metalocalypse was as good as the first?) However, NATHAN EXPLOSION and co. have just posted a video for the song "Bloodlines," which is even catchier than SNAKES N' BARRELS. I'm officially pumped.
What's more? Dethklok just added dates to their tour with MASTODON, CONVERGE and HIGH ON FIRE, including an extra NYC date after the first one sold out. Read all about it after the jump… (more…)
CONVERGE post new track on their MySpace

Consider me officially excited for the new CONVERGE cd, Axe To Fall. The band just posted an MP3 of the track "Dark Horse" on their MySpace page and it sounds absolutely killer. This, on top of the live tracks of new songs we captured a few months back shows this disc has a lot of promise. And, really, it's fucking Converge. They aren't going to settle for anything but a killer CD. Also, I can't wait to hear some of these guest appearances: Steve Brodsky (Cave In), Adam McGrath (Cave In), J.R. Connors (Cave In, Doomriders), Uffe Cederlund (Disfear, ex-Entombed), John Pettibone (The Vows, Himsa), Steve Von Till (Neurosis), and Mookie Singerman (Genghis Tron). The CD comes out October 20th via Epitaph.
MASTODON, DETHKLOK, CONVERGE, HIGH ON FIRE announce tour

What unites two huge crossover metal bands, brings along two of the best underground metal bands in the world and is almost as exciting as a SNAKES N' BARRELS reunion? How about a U.S. tour starring MASTODON, DETHKLOK, CONVERGE and HIGH ON FIRE? Some of the venues are bigger than what any of these bands usually play, so High on Fire and Converge may be able to add some Adult Swim viewers and Rolling Stone readers to their fanbases. Repeat: Some of the best live metal bands in the world, three of which have upcoming new albums (Converge, Dethklok, High on Fire) and the other still riding high on one of the year's best albums. Dates after the jump, k-k-k-yeahhhhhhh….

Aww yea, live clips of 3 NEW DOOMRIDERS Songs and Black F'n Thunder.
Last night, I attended BrooklynVegan-Black Bubblegum Showcase which was headlined by one of my favorite bands, DOOMRIDERS who absolutely ruled. They just ripped it. Pure, intense rock-and-roll. Nate Newton (who also happens to be the bassit of Converge) has one of the best screams in metal, even when he's not even trying. The band played a bunch of new songs from their upcoming release, Darkness Comes Alive due in August on Deathwish. You can view the title track above. Below is a listing of all the songs we taped, including one of the greatest songs ever written, Black Thunder…
- Darkness Comes Alive NEW SONG
- Heavy Lies the Crown NEW SONG
- Bare Witness NEW SONG
- Black Thunder (Best Song Ever)

Exclusive live footage of TWO new songs from CONVERGE
Metal Injection's resident hardcore bro Sean Gresens aka Spleen_Latifa just so happened to attend last Saturday's CONVERGE show at Club Europa in Brooklyn, NY. CONVERGE happened to play 2 new live songs. Sean just so happened to have a camera and taped the whole thing for all you junkies to see. Do you see how much Sean loves you? Over the next few days, we will be uploading the band's entire set from that night. We have already posted 4 songs online. Above, you will find the first (untitled) new song the band played. Jacob Bannon and crew played a second new song, which we uploaded here. We also posted Plagues and No Heroes so far. Come back throughout the week as we post the rest of the band's set from the show!

New CONVERGE sounds like it's going to rule
Not only does CONVERGE's new fly-on-the-wall video go far beyond the usual teaser standard of stoned guys laughing at their own jokes, it provides a few utterly sick measures of face-grinding awesomeness that just got me majorly pumped for an album that I'd almost forgotten was being recorded. Imagine some vaguely mathy punk-metal with an ungodly stoner riff thrown in, and be sure to wipe the blood off your keyboard once this one ends.

Start Spring right with OLD MAN GLOOM

OLD MAN GLOOM is as close to a doom supergroup as we're going to get. Featuring in it's ranks ISIS vocalist Aaron Turner as well as mega-metal-man Nate Newton of CONVERGE/DOOM RIDERS fame, add in members of CAVE IN and ZOZOBRA and you have one sludgtastic concoction. So on this fine Spring morning, enjoy one of my favorite songs from this band, Sleeping with Snakes off of their Christmas LP to get you in the right mood for the week ahead!

NEUROSIS, MASTODON, BORIS, NACHTMYSTIUM, HIGH ON FIRE, CRYPTOPSY, & More on one show – ABSOLUTELY FREE!!
So apparently, instead of taking the traditional route and advertising on TV, billboards, etc, Scion has decided to host music festivals instead as a means of promoting their brand. Strange? I thought so too, until I saw the lineup for their "Rock Fest." Holy mother of fuck, I don't care WHAT they're selling – any company that brings together the likes of NEUROSIS, HARVEY MILK, NACHTMYSTIUM, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, KRALLICE, ZOROASTER, and SALOME (for FREE) is a-okay by me.
According to their official site, the Scion Rock Fest will take place on Saturday, February 28th at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia. The show will go from noon until midnight and attendees must be at least 18 years old. Tickets are, apparently, free; no word yet on how one will be able to go about getting one's grubby paws on one of these golden tickets (though our brodudes over at MetalSucks.net will be giving some away to a few lucky readers).
THE LINEUP (read 'em and weep!):
NEUROSIS
MASTODON
CONVERGE
HIGH ON FIRE
BORIS
1349
CRYPTOPSY
TORCHE
NACHTMYSTIUM
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM
BARONESS
HARVEY MILK
KYLESA
ZOROASTER
WITHERED
KRALLICE
TOXIC HOLOCAUST
SKELETONWITCH
RWAKE
A STORM OF LIGHT
WARBRINGER
SALOME
SUIDAKRA
TYR
ALESTORM
With, apparently, more to come, if their website is to be believed. I don't know about you, but as soon as I saw this confirmed, I hopped online and booked a flight for Hotlanta. Honestly? If you have any of your wits, limbs, or available personal days left, you're a sucker if you don't do the same.
