Shocking Revelations

ANTHRAX's Scott Ian "Can't Stand" Dubstep

SCOTTIAN-DUBSTEP

Anthrax are very responsible for making it "cool" and "okay" for metal dudes to be into hip-hop in the early 90s after their collaboration with Public Enemy.

Hip-hop was the up and coming genre of the time, much like the genre of dubstep is today. Unfortunately for dubstep, Scott doesn't feel the same way about the new genre as he did about hip hop.

In a new interview with MTV, Scott was asked his feelings on the genre, and he was NOT into it:

No, I can’t stand any of that. Whatever this little phase of crap that’s around right now, which will be gone in the next 18 months, no. I thought dubstep was reggae when I first heard that genre description. I was like, Wow, reggae’s making a big comeback, huh? And then someone played me some dubstep thing. And I was like, “What the fuck is this?” So no. I’m not a fan of that name of music. [Laughs.] Nor am I a fan of DJs or any of that stuff.

Scott seems to have confused dubstep with dub (bands like Dub Trio rule!) but dubstep, not so much. I gotta say, I agree with you, Scott. Dubstep makes me feel old, because I just…don't…get it.

Thank you Scott! Fuck that shitty, built by a mouse click computer music. Any fuckhead with a computer can make "music". It takes a man (or woman) with elephant balls to make real music by hand.

    • Steve

I hate dubstep too, but saying any fuckhead with a computer can make "music" is ignorant. There is a lot of good electronica out there, Juno Reactor being one of them. He is very creative and is just as much a musician as anyone with a guitar is, and he collaborates with an ensemble of musicians from around the world constantly which makes his music unique and not just "computer noise."

      But yeah, dubstep is shit.

      • Rob

yeah but to take the stage playing complex songs at intense speeds note for note takes more balls than fucking with a disc and adjusting a couple nobs

    • AleexSteel

Since I was 4 years old I've listened to metal, I went to concerts ( alot of them) and had a band and all that stuff, but from like a year from now on I'm into electronic music, and I gotta say I play a lot of instruments and well and making electronic music in a computer like you said it's more difficult than play an instrument I can ensure you that, I like to have a mind wide open and don't judge other generes because the truth is that they're there for something, that's one thing I hate from metal fans I think the most of the people dedicate their time to hate other generes but without arguments, anyways I love metal and I still will be loving it, but I think before judging other people work we should take a closer look.

    • WayneJenkins

If you think that Anthrax don't use computers to make their music you're a fucking idiot

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000136502106 Freddy Lancaster

i wonder what he thinks of crossover bands like the algorithm? they're unbelievably talented and it's just a drummer and a dj…

  • http://www.facebook.com/bradley.terfehr Bradley Terfehr

I don't understand nor do I want to, and it will phase into nothing in a few more months. Hell while at job corps I wanted to smash my damn face into a wall when everybody started "dancing" to this crap. Can't Kill the Metal!

  • b

i wonder what he would think if a REALLY good metal band mixed the two genres with integrity..people have tried and failed miserably..it either sounds way too electronic or way too metal…Diablo swing orchestra is the closest band to TRY and do it on their latest album. if THEY cant do it and make it cool, it probably cant be done hehe. Scott probably doesnt like Korn i imagine..the album issues is ALMOST dub step in certain songs.

    • MikeForbid

Genghis Tron is a good representation of what is possible combining the genres, oh and HORSE the band. I'm talking about combining electronic music in general with heavy music in general. Not necessarily a specific subgenre. It's interesting what they come up with

    • Mothmonsterman

I do remember Scott Ian wishing stomach cancer on Korn in a Kerrang!(when it was half decent) interview back in the day,

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1127051873 Scott Ozz Blair

Now if only Anthrax would get back to playing good music…

    • Jon

      They did…it's called "Worship Music"

  • johnny phuchough

Probably because you don't have a clue how to make and produce it therefore it must "suck"

  • James

Old Fart! Shut up Ian, you're being a cunt with a big mouth, no validity to you're point other than you're old and being the sort of person you had to fight so hard against to make it where you are today. Fucking shame on you, out of touch and irrelevant comments like this are just inflammatory and don't help anyone. And fuck Metal injection for being a bunch of whores.

    • http://www.facebook.com/david.platt.927543 David Platt

Ok here is the big difference James, you could sit Ian down and show him the production process you go through to write a dubstep song he could put it together in 1 to 6 months, because it is purely based on equipment and theory. Scott Ian could sit a DJ down and show them all the theory and the technique he uses to play a song and those that had no prior experience playing guitar would have to work on it for years to develop. Bottom line there is little to NO real musical content in dubstep it's all shallow recycled bullshit production values.

      • WayneJenkins

Do you honestly believe what you are saying? I can understand if you don't like Dubstep but your argument is nonsensical. If you sat Scott Ian down and show him the production process to write a dubstep song then he would NEVER write a good one because he has no passion for that music. It would be the same if you asked a Dubstep DJ to write a metal song. The important thing with all music is the art created, not the amount of time it takes to learn how to make it. As for recycled bullshit, look no further than metal. It was all pretty much done in the eighties and nothing is new any more. There is only so much that you can do with drums, bass and guitar.

      • James

David Platt I'm sorry but you have no idea the effor tand time it takes to "push button's" to make decent electronic music. I've done both Metal and Electronic music and I;m in a band so I can actually talk from experience. Each has their own merit and can but just as hard to master or create an idea in your head. Plus I'm gathering you only listen to the Dub-Step/Electronic stuff that's forced fed to you? Did you do that with Metal? I thought not.

I am 17 and I dont get it, a lot of my friends are into along with screamo and shit like blood on the dancefloor and nightcore I cant pretend when they ask my opinion I say its shit and then they get pissy at me lol dont ask if you aren't open to criticism.

  • Zethus

I am a bouncer at a local strip club and this heaping pile of regurgitated monkey shit they call dubstep is played……A FUCKING LOT.

I agree with Scott 100% and I'll add this, how fucking dare they insult some of my favorite songs from my teen years by "dubstepping" them?! ….Just….no!!

Chino is on this and Bassnectar remixed Prince excellently. Plus, Bassnectar is collabing with Primus soon. Dubstep, Drumstep and Drum and Bass dj's are usually metalheads to begin with. they're just better at understanding programs than instuments. Does that make them any less of a musician? This shit's awesome, better than any hip hop bullshit i EVER heard, even the Onyx album Bacdafucup

Hank's on this, it probably didn't change his opinion much but he makes the song so great

three very good examples of dubstep/bass music NOT sucking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouyC28ffPjQ

      Phil's on this…

    • http://www.facebook.com/david.platt.927543 David Platt

a Phil Anselmo sample is not enough to make a song cool. I will respect DJs when they write dynamic songs with engaging musical progressions. I was playing more complex chords and piano melodies that anything in the above listed track when I was twelve. It's simple minded music that uses complex production to make itself seem much more than it is, but production can't hide the fact that it is musically ignornant bullshit!

  • Everlost

I expect he means shitty American brostep and not the more atmospheric UK sound which has been around for 8 or so years, some of which has a lot of stylistic similarities to Dub Reggae (just check out Blue Eyez or Dutch Flowerz by Skream). Seriously, thanks for ruining dubstep, America.

  • May the forbes be with you!

You need to see Chase and Status Live. As metal as dance gets. Been an Anthrax fan since Euphoria and I'm forty. I "get it" and yeah its a fad. Take off your blinkers and put your zimmers away, join in the fun while it lasts.

  • Shithead

Brostep is what Scott probably heard.

    • http://www.facebook.com/deadstretch Sean Patrick Larkin

Yeah. The way the mainstream suck every meaning out of something then generalize a certain sound is quite pathetic. Dubstep is a two part word. Dub as in the huge Reggae Dub scene in UK at the time. Step = 2 step. All that "face melting wub wub wub" actually isn't even Dubstep, not even a subgenre of it. It shares more similarities with Electro than it does with "Dubstep."

  • Jon

Real music is played by real musicians, not by some nerd who has a recording software on his Dell laptop.
