Quick Review: INIQUITOUS SAVAGERY Subversions of the Psyche

When I first saw the name Iniquitous Savagery and viewed the excellent album art work, I had to listen to it. Knowing it would be brutal death from the start, simply by the name and artwork, I braced myself for either some boring, stereotypical brutal death, or something new. Before I knew it, my eyes burned as if red coals had replaced them, and were sizzling into my skull. This is no genre-defining album, it's not breaking rules, or creating new ones. What it is…its brutal, technical, and as heavy as a beached shark devouring curious children who venture too close.

In 2009, Iniquitous Savagery formed. Based in the United Kingdom, this four member band created a demo in 2012, Compelled by Perverse Immorality. They were then signed by Grindethic Records and have just released their first full-length in September of this year.

The vocals are excellent, the drumming superb, and the guitar riffs are incredible. Each entity has its own strength, but they are molded together so seamlessly, it doesn't take long to be able to appreciate the album. The guttural vocals resonate, and occasionally transition to squeal-like sounds. The drumming is technical, and has excellent fills, but it's not overbearing in where it shadows every other instrument. The guitars have plenty of hooks and groovy segments that carry each song on a unique but timeless passage.

There is no shortage of brutality here on Subversions of the Psyche. From the opening track, "Prey to the Agonies of Morbid Apprehension", to the closing masterpiece that is "Subjugated Into Pathological Service", this roughly 30 minute album will relentlessly pour hot embers down your throat until your stomach is a hotbox of boiling acidic juices primed for gastric combustion.

If you enjoy brutal death to any degree, this quality release by Iniquitous Savagery is well worth the investment. I have over 35 listens on it, and plan to purchase a hard copy.
