Aside the review, it has to said out loud that it is fucking sad what has happened to In Flames. This "new" era starting after Clayman has been a downward spiral that reached a total bottom with this sense of purpose. The name is good though, it poses a question that the band should seriously ask themselves. A look in the mirror would most likely reveal them as businessmen who look to benefit from the growing trend of teenrock among US kids. The point with the Billboard charts was good from the reviewer and underlined this point. What is sad is that the good music has been buried somewhere far deeper than 6 feet under. This is business. Maybe the mirrors truth precedes that they break up after this album and tour to look ways to do some real music in new band(s).

Review isn't half bad.

Album is half-assed and mediocre like everything else In Flames has put out that is not Colony or Jester Race. Has about three good songs and doesn't do anything else. Songwriting is mediocre. Vocals are shit. Then again, it's a new In Flames album and that doesn't change.

I actually bookmarked this page just to see how many people would respond with the goofy, non-sensical post that Bunk did. Glad you dropped that little gem of production knowledge on us, BRO! An 808 bass drum patch? WOW, DUDE! You're such hot shit! must be a fuckin sound engineer who's got more chops than anyone here when it comes to music... and god knows that means we should value your dumbass statements more than anyone else's well-constructed thoughts.

Bunk, you said that people were just "in shock" that they have "no taste in music"... what the fuck are you even talking about? "NO" taste, or did you mean to say "BAD" taste? Furthermore, how would this half-assed partial "social commentary" on In Flames really enlighten me on any subject, especially my musical taste? THAT is, essentially, my main point. Love them or hate them, WRITE A REVIEW ABOUT THE FUCKING ALBUM. Don't post "In Flames used to play melodic death metal. Now they have synth and play a more modern style of melodic metal. It's the same as usual. I don't like it." and call it a review. And if you, Bunk, would've been literate enough to READ, you would've seen that I've expressed this thought multiple times already.

And if your grammar wasn't atrocious enough (learn how to capitalize and use the correct spellings of words, you fucking child), it was an extra bonus to see you say "you kids whining about the reviewer not 'listening'...", as the reviewer probably DIDN'T listen (and sure as hell didn't review), you CLEARLY didn't read, and I'd bet cold, hard cash on the fact that you're all of 16 years old and consider yourself an elitist because you bought an old-school Carcass shirt off JSRdirect.com. FUCKING IMBECILES.

This is NEW In Flames, notice the bands new logo. I have heard entire album, its better than Reroute, Soundtrack and Come Clarity era, but no way near to Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony and Clayman times.

Anyone who says Sense of Purpose similar to previous three ablums hasn't listened it yet. The style is brand new and different. Quite good and refreshing, but could have been better.

The album reviewer has no idea whats he talking about.

My god people. Since when does music follow a requirement to be typecast into a certain genre to be good. Sure there will never be another jester race, whoracle, or colony. get over it. i know it sux but its a music industry fact. They've hit the big time and theres no coming back from it. sure its not "black" or "metallic" enough for you but you cant produce nine albums without experience a change in sounds. if you hate it, then you hate it. dont come on here and jump on the bad review bandwagon (not to the reviewer but the posters). just respect them for still making music people care about. if its not cool to listen to in flames anymore than go make sure your chained dickies and black slipknot hoodie are still in your closet. I bet you used to think THAT was cool. Its fucking music people it aint perfect

this album is very boring. i think you kids whining about the reviewer not "listening" are just in shock that you have no taste in music.... IF where pushing the boundaries of melody, now there pushing the boundaries of an 808 bass drum patch....

Gotta say i agree with the reviewer to a degree. Very same ol same ol. Not that same isnt good however it just felt like this album didnt smack me in the face like previous albums. The question remains are in flames merely changing with the times? Call me old fashioned but some more old whoracle and jester race in flames trax would have been nice to hear filtered through the new ones. I know they have it in em and i hope this isnt a case of record label stripping back whats 'good' to replace with what 'sells'. Highly unlikely due to nuclear blast's reputation of releasing brutal shit. On a personal level im still diggin the album however on terms of power i just think this albums nuts havent dropped quite just yet... will it be successful...only time will tell. Still a dedicated fan but must admit was a little to soft an so NOT in flames in some parts. That being said Music=Life people go and buy this album you wont be dissapointed still a kik ass listen!!

You don't take criticism well, do you?... That's a damn shame, considering you're trying to make a career out of being a critic, but with completely unwarranted and amateurish "reviews". Well, if anything, maybe people telling you the truth (about how childish and uninspiring your work is) will finally give you that kick in the balls to produce some descriptive, relevant reviews. After reading the joke of an entry you called a "review", I'd place you at nowhere over 18 years of age, and yet, my gut tells me that you're really in your mid-20's and spend your time outside of "writing" as a Blabbermouth junkie who says whatever the crowds say, as mindless and as typo-ridden as they may say it. You can keep up the terrible work and reply here, sounding like a scolded child, and pray that your only saving grace is that you have a relative in the industry to keep you from being secluded only to myspace blogging... OR you can decide to spend less time sulking in your parents' house over people laughing at your "work" and use it to step up your review/writing process and deliver quality.
P.S. @ "Agree with DE": Both magazines and webzines alike receive what are called "promo copies" of albums for previewing/reviewing purposes. They receive these discs a bit earlier than the release date. This helps with hyping (or destroying) an album before the release, as reviews pop up a bit before the commercial release as well. So, chances are, crustcake actually DID have the opportunity to listen to the new album, in full... which makes his awkward and poorly constructed "review" that much more bewildering.

Damn you suck at reviewing an album! You got all wrong! And that album is not yet release, so you cannot have listen to it. There's only 3 songs released yet. This shitty review really needs to be removed.

"I’ve listened to each and every In Flames album at great length, including ‘A Sense of Purpose’. I stand by every word I wrote in this review."

Fine, but that doesn't make it a good review. Read the post above mine to explain in detail what was wrong with it. Simplified, your review says: I like old In Flames. This is not old In Flames, therefore I do not like it as much. The end.

It doesn't matter whether what you said was right or wrong, it's just not a very good review. It's a forum post, but hey, this isn't a forum. Learn to write a review.

Good lord, I really hope you don't get paid to contribute your reviews here. Your "review" was literally an elitist's recap of In Flames' recent shift in sound (which began in 2002, according to you)... and nothing else. You've REVIEWED nothing except the band's recent history which can be referenced through a million other websites. Your categorization of "melodic INDUSTRIAL death metal" is laughable at best. Briefly mentioning "electronic beeps, bleeps, and synth pads" hardly warrants a band's sound to be categorized as anything containing the word "industrial". One could also argue the use of the term "death metal" when describing In Flames' recent sound as well, but that's an entire argument in and of itself.

Also, mentioning the Billboard charts is about as nonsensical as the structure of the first sentence ("In Flames are nothing if not consistent."??? Were you looking to say "In Flames are consistent, if nothing else."???). Marred grammar through double negatives aside, you've said nothing about THE ALBUM here. I'm not even writing this as an In Flames fan, but as someone who believes that if you are to review an album, you should do just that. If you think their last 4 albums sound alike, TELL ME WHY (You'd be wrong, but I'd like to hear why you think you're right). If you think the new album sounds similar to recent efforts, TELL ME HOW. Talk about the material you're supposed to be reviewing, not about the material you're still spinning that came out in '97 or '99.

LEARN TO WRITE SOMETHING WITH SUBSTANCE. PLEASE. God, I can't believe your review was so terrible that I not only spent the time reading it, but replying to it in such a fashion.

" virtually the same album four times in a row since 2002"

Are you joking? You've either not listened to these albums or are deaf, because Reroute, Soundtrack, and Come Clarity are all vastly different albums with only a few core elements binding them together under the 'in flames' banner. This 'review' of A Sense of Purpose is pretty lame... have you actually listened to the album, or is this just a prediction? I learned virtually nothing about the album from this review, and your first paragraph is ridiculous, as is most of what you wrote. This needs rewriting or taking down.
