DISTURBED's David Draiman Could Have Saved The Music Industry

david-draiman

You may have heard by now that Disturbed frontman has let the cat out of the bag that the band is going on an indefinite hiatus after they complete their current touring commitments. But it doesn't end there. Draiman has been on a rampage as of late, speaking his mind freely on Twitter, WHERE HE ONLY TYPES IN CAPS (maybe his phone is broken?). When pressed for how he would fix the broken music industry, this was Draiman's suggestion:

“THAT’S A LONG STORY. MY OPINION IS THAT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY MISSED THE BOAT. I DON’T BLAME THE FANS OR THE PUBLIC FOR WANTING A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO GET THEIR MUSIC. HAD THE RECORD LABELS NEGOTIATED WITH THE ISP’S 10-15 YEARS AGO TO BUILD IN A FILE SHARING FEE TO THE STANDARD ISP MONTHLY SERVICE CHARGE, SAY AN ADDITIONAL 5 DOLLARS A MONTH FOR UNLIMITED FILE SHARING, THAT OFFERED INCENTIVES AND SPECIAL TRACKS/ RELEASES, WOULDN’T YOU HAVE DONE IT? OVER 70 MILLION PEOPLE SUBSCRIBE TO ISP’S. 70 MILLION x 5 DOLLARS A MONTH IS A WHOLE LOT OF REVENUE THAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN MISSING OUT ON. FILE SHARING WOULD HAVE BEEN W/O CONSEQUENCE AND AT MINUSCULE COST. EVERYONE WOULD HAVE WON. NOW WERE ALL PLAYING CATCH UP. TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE”

Wow, why haven't the ISPs ever seen it from your point of view David? Why not charge 5 dollars more and give that money to the record industry. One problem, how would they know what people downloaded? How do the labels split that revenue? How do the bands get paid. There would be no way to do this without tracking people's every moves. So everybody should give up their privacy? Great idea, David.

See the thing is, there is something out there that does what Draiman is suggesting, in a much more organized fashion and it's called Spotify. I've been using the service for a few weeks now, and in no-time did I actually subscribed to the service. And, anytime you stream track, that artist gets paid.

If only Draiman had heard of Spotify, maybe Disturbed wouldn't have broken up. On second thought, NOBODY TELL DRAIMAN ABOUT SPOTIFY!

First Corey Taylor and now Dave Draiman wants to stir up drama about the future of his band. I like to see where this goes.

  • Kneel

    Rob, you're silly.
Dave Draiman is talking about the "global licence" principle. It's a process to pay artists the same way the radio is doing it.
I don't know how the system work in the US (I'm sure that all is very unregulated as usual), but in France, there's an institution called the "SACEM" (acronym wich I can translate by ; Music society of composer, author, editors) wich divide and share the benefits the artists record to the society (there's no obligation of course, the aim is to protect your copyright) breeds, function's of the quantity of radio (or TV or whatever…) diffusion the artist get.
Draimin is just suggesting that we should apply the same "concept" to the filesharing.
If this work for an entire country, it will be even more easier with internet, cause our moves are allreaday tracked, Itunes and Spotify know exactly what are you listening and how many times you did. So what?! Everyone knows, the music platform are already social network, the sharing and the split between artists will be very efficient! All they have to do is to legally supervise some subtlety but there's nothing unfeasible.
You pay a few dollars more (tax or price raise of your service providers) to finance the music industry. No this isn't communism, this is common sense.
So…yeah…this is pretty much what spotify is about, instead that no one force you to go there and pay for your music.
There's style plenty of people with bad faith who will continue free downloading, just because they can.
If the system is fair, it worth the shot to pay 5$ (this is absolutely nothing) a month to fully enjoy the pleasures of digital consumption. It's a legitimate way to pick the money where it is instead of naïvely waiting for a mentality change hopin' that people will give support even if they don't need to.
Global licence is the key, every one knows that, but nor politics nor corporation want to change their habits. It's not in their interest to adapt their business.

I read your sentence, read his first two sentences in a lisp and I agree.

Spotify is not really a viable solution either. The band need to be as popular as disturbed themselves to get anything more than pennys from spotify. But at least its something.

  • Kneel

Yèp, Spotify is a good but imperfect system.

    Is that Howie Mandel?!

get spotified wahh ah ah ahh!

I'm pretty sure there is no way they could have regulated file sharing (especially 5 years ago). They would have a hard time doing it now. And it's not just music. It's movies, tv shows, software and books. However I don't see how when people download a tv show it's really missed revenue.
