Remembering Dimebag Darrell, Who We Tragically Lost 8 Years Ago Today

Dimebag Darrell

It's crazy to think that eight years have passed since the tragic shooting of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbot, shot by a psycho fan  and taken away from us far too soon. Dime left quite the legacy of shred, including some absolutely amazing work with Pantera as well as the beginning stages of his new project, Damage Plan.

Every year on December 8th, the metal community stops for a moment and remembers a legend. I never met Dime personally, but I have met and spoke with plenty who have, and the consensus is he was the nicest person ever, always had a smile, and a black tooth grin ready to go. So raise your black tooth up to the pink beard in the sky, and salute one of the greatest shredders of our time.

Its definitely one of those "know exactly where you were when you heard" moments. I'll never forget that moment. I had just seen DamagePlan 2 nights before…

I was 15, on a school-wide field trip to Pennsylvania to visit…I believe…the Bunker Hill Momument? The bus stopped at some shitty little hole-in-the-wall local mall in eastern New York. What do I do? Immediately hit up the Strawberries that was conveniently there. Bought 2 cassettes, Metallica's Ride The Lightning & Pantera's Vulgar Display Of Power. Get back on the bus & pop on "Ride" 'cause "Fight Fire With Fire" was one of my favorite songs at that point. Pressed play, THE FUCKIN' AUDIO WAS'NT EVEN METALLICA! It was some bullshit ass-hat spanish glam band or something?!? It must've been a factory defect where band tapes must have gotten mixed up somehow in the production process!! Fuckin' weird right?!? So, immediately ejected the(forgive me)"Spictallica" tape, & popped in "Vulgar". The rest was history once "A New Level" came on. Thrashed my fuckin' ass off in that bus seat the whole trip (much to the dismay of everyone else on the bus, but I didn't give a shit, FUCK 'EM!!!) I still to this day get the urge to make "Black Tooth Grins" whenever my daughter just happens to be watching Spongebob, & that one episode comes on that the band itself appeared on(sans Phil). Bless your soul Mr. Abbott. You deserved that red black & white Van Halen guitar Eddie van Halen himself placed in your coffin at your memorial service. You've made an impact on more lives than you can possibly even imagine, that will resound infinitely throughout time as long as the human race continues to exist on this planet. Period.
