Pre-Show Superstitions: Stranger Than Fiction
It makes sense that musicians who are about to play in front of thousands of expectant fans might feel some jitters. I bet a good percentage of them are downright terrified. So, it should come as no surprise that these guys will take any bit of help that they can get to make sure that the show goes off without a hitch. And that includes some pretty strange pre-show rituals. Of course, the world is full of unusual superstitions, but some of these really take the proverbial biscuit.
Interestingly, Alice Cooper, the one musician that you’d expect to have an “out there” ritual that involves séances and perhaps some sort of witchcraft has a pretty boring pre-show ritual. Apparently, he sits and watches Kung Fu movies and stuffs his face with Skittles.
But if you think that’s boring, it’s nothing compared to Led Zeppelin. The old rockers like to enjoy a few cups of coffee before a show while singer Robert Plant simply needs a little space to iron his shirts. These are the same guys that used to drive motorcycles through hotel lobbies, aren't they?
And speaking of aging rockers, we come to the Rolling Stones or to be more specific Keith Richards. His name is synonymous with wild behavior, and he’s one of those guys that no matter how hard he parties, he will outlive everyone. But his pre-show ritual is more strange than wild. Richards must have a shepherd’s pie baked and ready for him to eat backstage before a show. But not only that, he must be the one to break the crust. If anyone else does it, he’ll refuse to eat it and ask for another one to be baked. Now we finally know why all those Stones concerts were delayed.
The Foo Fighters are no strangers to weird madcap behavior either, so is it really that surprising that they spend their time before a show dancing to Michael Jackson music? Yep, that’s right, they turn on “Off the Wall” and dance their collective feet off. Unusual? Hell yes.
Eminem apparently likes to pump a bit of iron before a show and eat some Lunchables (six to be exact). Why? That would be anyone’s guess, but hey, if it works, then go for it. As for Coldplay, they have a ridiculous list of things they must do before walking on stage; one of which is to brush their teeth.
Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford says he likes to have a cup of tea and play some Nintendo while Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers goes for a run. The Kings of Leon do a bit of chanting and sing themselves a gospel song. Has the world of music been turned on its head? What happened to getting arrested and bailed out an hour before the show?
Seriously though, it’s probably a good thing that these guys are done with the obnoxious rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of yesteryear. They are, after all, supposed to be setting an example for the new generation, right? When you hear of guys like Marilyn Manson limbering up for a show by listening to Justin Timberlake, you know that the music world as we once knew it has changed forever. These may not have been the kind of strange rituals you expected, but you have to admit, they are pretty weird.
