Former OPETH Drummer's New Band Sounds A Lot Like OPETH
- Posted by RobInjection on February 3, 2012
I was pretty bummed when Martin Lopez left Opeth midway through the Ghost Reveries album cycle. But, the guy had a bunch of personal demons to deal with and needed time off the road. Well, it looks like he's cleaned up and had enough time to get his shit together so much so that he has a new band, Soen. The band also features former Testament bassist Steve DiGiorgio, as well as vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis. When I heard the band had a video out (directed by the great Patric Ullaeus no less), I was excited to hear what they sound like. Turns out, they sound very similar to Lopez's former band Opeth… and I don't mean that as an insult. It's just great to hear Lopez drumming again. Their debut album Cognitive hits stores February 15th on Spinefarm. Check out this sick album art they have for it.

They kinda remind me of Tool.
I was thinking more Tool as well. I think you're thinking it sounds like Opeth because you want it too.
Also in his case personal demons = cocaine.
Like the other comments… Your title should be "Ex-Opeth Drummer's New Band Sounds Like TOOL." Visually and audibly. Take out that fast part and POOF! Tool.
I also wondered after listening for a good 3:50min, why the hell is this song so long, then I awoke with drool coming out my mouth and head stuck to my desk.
This sounds like what would happen if James Maynard Keenan kicked Akerfeldt down to a supporting role within Opeth.
Yep, Tool to me. But still, interesting.
The melodies sound Opeth-y but nothing else really.
Wow It's awesome but what an awkward listen..
Martin Lopez definately looks better (gained some weight)… I you look at Opeth's dvd Lamentations with Martin on drums,,, you could tell he was going through stuff, bad ass drummer though. This sounds no question like Tool mainly couse of the singer, no that excited bout it :(
Toolpeth, it's gonna kick ass and hopefully help us forget of Heritage.
I feel bad for having to agree with this, but yeah, agreed.
