FOR TODAY Guitarist Hates The Gays For Jesus

For Today Guitarist

There are some musicians who are really Christian. There are some musicians who are really homophibic. For Today guitarist Mike Reynolds happens to be that wonderful combination of both.

For Today is a metalcore band on Razor & Tie Records. They have a sizable following. For some reason, Reynolds wasn't happy with this so he decided to speak up and alienate some of his fan base with a recent Twitter meltdown:

“There IS a state church being formed, there is going to be an exclusive acceptance of preachers who advocate the LGBT. Don’t be deceived, homosexuality is a sin. This sin with all other sins is what Jesus died for. He conquered so that we would be free.

No such thing as a gay Christian, the same as there is no such thing as a Christian who loves his sin. Don’t be fooled by the formation of a state church as though the government is being converted, they only use the name of Jesus for their Progressive liberal agenda.

If you are a Christian then separate yourself from this civil religion that advocates sin. Be true to God.”

This guy is a total winner. It'd be easy to point out all the verses in the bible that say everyday things that we do are sins (like those tattoos you have, Mike), or even go on a whole rant about religion itself, but I think this NSFW photoshop that I found on Tumblr eloquently surmises the only proper retort to this sort of lunacy. You are giving Christians and metalheads a bad name.

For Today is set to kick off a headlining tour if any of you dudes want to show up and flirt with Mike to make him feel uncomfortable.

Please. I know of several christians who like this sort of music who will just laugh at this guy. It's 2013 and these sorts of idiots still exist.

    • Kev

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Its 2013 and God hasn't changed. Neither has his word, neither will it pass away.

  • PURIST

this band is autoproclamed metal? cuz this shit isn't metal it's something like hardcore rock shitty faggot thing and christianity (That shitty religion is gay like jews)

    • religionisshit

      You sound very uneducated. FYI

  • Flot

Where did he say that he "hates" homosexuals ?

    • dogbert

He made it clear that he thinks homosexuality is a sin, and that he hates sin. Not hard to put together.

      • MAC

It CLEARLY states in the bible that it IS a sin.
        Romans 1:26-27
"For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error."

        1 Corinthians 6:9-10
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."

        • MAC

          In the NEW TESTAMENT.
Oh and he made it clear that he hates the SIN not the PERSON.
Two different things. People are distorting what he said.

        • eric esoteric

Hate to break it to you all–but, basically, ANY type of sex, gay or straight, out of wedlock is considered a sin. You're to express love with sexual contact and with it create life. Any type of random sexual behavior; cheating on one's spouse is a sin. That's what some believe, that is all. If you're Catholic and do that=it's considered a sin=go to confession for forgiveness and you're supposed to try not to sin again, if you do =go to confession. It's a plain and simple following of the church. God doesn't hate people, people hate people. This guy from the band FOR TODAY didn't express any hate for Gays. He stated what he believes in ant that's that. I thought it was still a free country in the USA and EVERYONE was to be able to have their own thoughts, values, morals, beliefs (or lack their of)? Not everyone can be a p*ssy and follow what the new "in thing" is (which seems to be to live like whores)! Anyone that bashes others for their beliefs are total ignorant, uneducated, immature a**holes.

      • Kev

This article displays a lack of adequate research, and a radical agenda to discredit people of faith that believe differently than you. This isn't journalism, its propaganda.

And in regards to Mike's statements, and in light of Mac's post below, where he quoted Romans and 1st Corinthians, Mike is absolutely right about a state church that endorses anything as "Biblical" that is clearly not.

2 Peter 2:1-3 1But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does[a] not slumber.

        • Kev

A false gospel leads straight to hell and eternal separation from an awesome God, who is Love.

On top of that, Jesus is more metal than anyone; more than a 'weak man on a cross'. I wouldn't go toe to toe with him, check this out:

Revelation 1:13-18 13and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

"hate sin but not the sinner"

        • http://www.facebook.com/RoryEMorris Rory Morris

Yes, "Jesus hated the sin, not the sinner," someone protesting a gay pride parade once told me.

So I guess he was really creepily obsessed with the sexual activities of others… That's really weird.

    • Sambo

That's exactly what I am saying.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mitch.lieber Mitch Lieber

Good point. ^ He just said that he thinks its a sin and illogically thinks he can bottle it down to the "progressive liberal agenda" and being "true to God." Its really people who think like this that bring a bad connotation to Christianity by making claims that certain people don't deserve equality based on sexual orientation. However, Its simply what he believes and feels the need to tweet about so whatever. It's not worth getting all worked up over something one persons fallacious view of simple respect.

    • Dragon

He didn't but the Liberals ( aka deceived ) want to demonize him therefore they make untruthful leaps to produce a deceit-intending claim that's clearly not true.

He never said he hated them. Only thought it was sinful. Bashing him for his beliefs is as bad as him thinking homosexuality is a sin

    • dogbert

Well he didn't have to say it, it's written on the fucking wall. This article isn't even bashing him really

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004056293526 Darren Delgado

      No, no, no, no, no.

Bashing someone for their beliefs is perfectly valid. "Beliefs" are something you choose, not a skin color or an ethnicity or sexual preference, all things you are born with and can't choose. Beliefs should be judged on MERIT. If you have stupid beliefs, you SHOULD 100% be judged harshly for them. This is a good thing and it is how we forced Christians gradually over time to stop owning slaves and beating the shit out of people with rocks.

If you don't like having your beliefs judged, get less shitty beliefs.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000117034258 Phillip Cantu

"If you don't like having your beliefs judged, get less shitty beliefs."

As much as I think Mike Reynolds is an idiot, this is a sentiment I have to disagree with. Beliefs are entirely subjective. With the logic you propose here, that'd mean there is such thing as bad taste in music (which is fucking stupid, anyone past the age of 15 would agree). If Mike wants to be homophobic, let him live in his shitty little world of intolerance. The rest of the world will happily pass him by an dissociate from his type.

That said, I still think he's a fucking idiot.

        • CockerDaniel

Beliefs are not nearly as subjective as music. If you say you like Amorphis in public, no reasonable person will care. If you say you like Asking Alexandria in public, no reasonable person will care. If you say homosexuality is a sin or gays are automatically damned to hell or any other vomit of the tongue along those lines, people will care.
What music one listens to does not really say anything about that person's character or integrity. What one believes says a hell of a lot about that person. There is a social standard that hopefully most of us hold in that we avoid hate and intolerance. If someone's beliefs actively work against that and actively discriminate and offend a group of people based on their sexual orientation, there is a problem. There is no excuse for such ignorance, especially in this day and age.

      • eric esoteric

Saying you're born gay is a bunch of crap. You choose who wanna play with. What's next? re we gonna start saying that adults that like to have sex with kids can't help it because they are "born that way" too? (Though some freak college professor was reported recently in the news is now trying to "prove" this point. You choose what you want to engage in….People are such wimps and always act like scapegoats. "I do this because A, B, C…It's not my fault, I can't help it, blah, blah, blah." Own up to what you do–be accountable and reap what you so–consequences of your actions… So sick of what sheep people have become in America…People bitch about not following religion, but you sure as hell do everything possible to be look upon as "hip" or "with it" by gorging on everything you f*Cking see on TV while chugging the likes of Obama's cool-aid! Bunch of f*ckin' idiots–Keep thinking with your d*cks & p*ssies–America is so benefiting from such scumbag mentalities!

    • Gry

Not really bud – You can pick and choose what religion you believe in. You can't pick your sexual orientation.

      • eric esoteric

You can pick to f*ck a boy or a girl, your hand or a goat….Like you can pick either chocolate or vanilla ice cream. It's choices. So tell me, just what is this overpowering force that makes one "can't help" to be gay or straight? Answer–NOTHING!!!

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=548736119 Andy Bates

Something called "love" perhaps? I don't pity you for not being familiar with the kind of love that leaves you hopelessly attached to someone, because it never worked out for me. As a man, I've never felt it for another man, but if I did, it would be insane to claim that it would be better to have sex with a woman I didn't love because an old book with numerous varying translations seems to tell me it would be wrong with another man.

  • Markojudas

Just because he didn't literally said "I HATE THE GAYS" it doesn't mean he doesn't… especially after reading what he said.

    • Gary

Who the fuck cares..this band sucks dick anyways. Haha. He'd be gay for jesus.

  • Stevis

He is rejecting tolerance of sinful behavior in the church, not homosexuals; unfortunately, this is a divisive debate within the church — and country — right now. Further, an even more technical debate is whether homosexuality is natural (inherent) or nurtured (learned); so, for the comments made equating sexual orientation with skin color, you are speaking assuredly on a matter which is inconclusive amongst the most learned and professional scholars, psychiatrists and doctors — quite arrogant and, by reason, is a "shitty belief" based on debatable evidences. Further, Jewish law appropriated stoning; Jesus, when asked to stone a woman caught in fornication (yep, a sexual sin), rejected the tradition. So, under the "New Covenant, stoning folks is a discontinued practice. Also, to Purist, you're a fool.

    • CockerDaniel

I know several gay people who have straight siblings and have no significant difference in how they grew up. Your name is Stevis, so I'll assume you're a man. Can you make yourself gay? Obviously anyone can go and have gay sex, but can a supposedly straight man force himself to mentally be gay and enjoy it? As a straight man I simply can't imagine being sexually attracted to another man. That's just how I am. I assume the same principle applies to gays.

Also, the bible contradicts itself in SOOOOO many ways it's ridiculous. Jesus also said something along the lines of "I have not come to abolish God's laws, but to supplement them." Anyway, the existence of a Christian God simply doesn't make sense. Why would God create people and let them suffer sometimes terrible lives, then sent to hell? There are people in this world who have never heard of Jesus, and would therefore be born to die and go to hell. When I ask Christians this question, they say that those circumstances are due to Satan's influence in the world. Well alright, why doesn't God get rid of Satan? When I ask Christians this question, they proceed to spout various things from the bible that are completely irrelevant to the query.

TL;DR Gays can't choose their sexual orientation, and based on simple logic God either is an asshole who doesn't give a shit about us, God is not all powerful, or God doesn't exist, at least not in the sense that we generally think of.

      • Stevis

Your experience is limited. I have interacted with many different Christian men, whose opinions on the origin of their orientation differ. So, do not be so quick to assume based one one experience, that is an epistemological fallacy.

I concede that there are apparent difficulties in the Bible. I won't bother trying to answer them, although I will say your one example is quite useless, since Jesus supplementing the Law doesn't refute my earlier statement, nor does it actually contradict anything Biblically. He is literally saying I have come to interpret the law. Further, it is unfortunate that close-minded folks are often the loudmouths, because there are many ways of answering the questions you are asking, all of which are equally Christian. For example, Origen, an early Church father discussed the possibility of universalism — answering the question of folks not hearing about Jesus. Others hold that the Apostle's Creed's quotation of Peter announcing that Jesus descended to the dead is evidence of a post-mortem opportunity for salvation. In the same way that people have different ways of understanding politics, economics, schooling, ethics, etc… Christianity has different ways about talking about its doctrines.

God gave humanity choice. Now we can choose to do what is good, or we can do what is bad. God does give a shit about us. We just don't typically give a shit about him, and choose to do what is bad. The blame just typically gets misplaced.

In any case, I am 100% in agreement with you that God does not exist in the sense we generally think of. In fact, I don't really think God exists in a sense that we could think of. That's why thousands of years worth of minds haven't been able to construct a perfect understanding of God.

I apologize on behalf of the Church for the nuisance it has been over the years, unfortunately it is made up of people who are hurt and broken. Jesus came for the sick and broken, and he got a multitude of them.

        Grace.

        • CockerDaniel

Trust me, I've had more than one experience with those in the church. I grew up in it. As history has progressed, more and more pieces of the bible became ignored, or treated as folklore or allegories rather than straightforward happenings or teachings. The stance on homosexuality is almost certainly the next thing to be cut. Various churches pick and choose from the Bible in different ways, showing how disjointed, obscure and out of touch the book really is.

In regards to human choice, what gave us the capacity for sin and the capacity to be unworthy of heaven is the influence of the Devil. God let Satan continue to exist, to this very day obviously. He allowed hell to exist as well. As the all-knowing and all-powerful, he created Adam and Eve knowing they would fall and damn the grand majority of the human race that would follow them. He created us with the knowledge that most of us are fucked from the get-go. He's always had the power to dispel the world of evil, but has never done so. This is why he is either a dick, not indeed all-powerful, or he does not exist in the way that Christians think of Him.

There are questions that no one on Earth can answer. People reach to religion and spirituality in an attempt to answer, but they are futile. If these faiths give some comfort, then that's alright, but when these beliefs invoke feelings of hatred, judgement, intolerance or superiority, they are inexcusable. I live my life not according to faith in an entity (or entities) which likely doesn't exist (and if it does, we'll never begin to understand it), but according to my faith in the people I love and trust.

Religion has done it's part in shaping the culture of our race, but it's time that most of these faiths be discarded in order to bring people together and actually work on understanding the universe around us, rather than steadfastly defying science, as well as tolerance, because an old, unreliable tome (or an old, unreliable priest/pastor) tells us to.

  • Luke Ellison

This is For Today's latest facebook post:
"For today has always and will always be a band that is about loving people, we have no hatred towards any people regardless of what they believe or how they live. We may not agree on everything but Jesus loves you and died for you. And so would we.
    Blessings, For Today"
They have no hate for homosexuals, they just disagree with their lifestyles and especially with the rising belief of it being okay to be gay and a christian. They refuse to follow in the sinful path of the world and are therefore criticized.
Matthew 5:11,12 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven."

You're all retarded. We have so many problems already, the last thing we need to do is freak out because this guy has an opinion that doesn't agree with the 'norm.' Why are we taking away peoples rights to believe in what they want? If you want to disagree with homosexuality, you can. You can disagree with heterosexuality for all i care.

Amen! Hypocrisy and double standards reign these days. Everyone believes that they and ONLY they know the answers to everything while attacking anyone else believing differently. Its not like he said "if you're gay go kill yourself." he is reminding Christians of what is in the bible and what is true to Christian doctrine. I agree with him and I'm not a homophobe.

The article was written to make said guitarist look like an idiot, but I think the writer of the article is the idiot. Yes, things we do on a daily basis are sinful. No, the bible doesn't say tattoos are a sin. There is ONE verse that some people misinterpret to believe that, and the writer of the article probably has never even read it. He is trying to back up his point by explaining something he has no idea about.

If mike reynolds is hating on anyone, it is the people who are trying to chamge the bible to match current trends. Again, he is just reminding Christians of what Christian doctrine is. Which is fine. This is not the first and foremost thing about Christianity. But, if you are a Christian then it is part of the doctrine.

  • FishGuts

Mike Reynolds is a dumb. You have a right to believe in what ever you want. When you go out and publicly say things like this, its offensive. What if I told a christian that I think their belief in god was disgusting but I don't hate them? It would still hurt their feels and you all know it. Stop defending him.

  • mickyflip

Christians from denominations that DO allow same-sex marriage get legally married.
