DREAM THEATER Aiming To Hit The Studio In May For A New Album

Likely not due out until 2019.

Likely not due out until 2019.

The prospect of a new Dream Theater album has become really enticing over the past year. Guitarist John Petrucci said in two separate interviews that he'd like to explore the possibilities of an eight-string guitar on the next album, and that the music would likely be a throwback to the band's earlier material. The throwback bit makes sense too, considering Dream Theater spent quite a lot of time out on the road playing their 1992 album Images & Words in full during the past year.

Now keyboardist Jordan Rudess has chimed in on the new album speculations via an interview with Vintage Rock, saying he'd like to hit the studio in May and release the album maybe a year from then or less. Petrucci had been saying the new album would likely be out in 2019 too, so it seems safe to say that we're not getting a Dream Theater record this year.

"So, you know, it'll take some time to create it, and then once we've composed it all and recorded it all, and then to make all the packaging and all the stuff, and who knows? It'll probably come out, let's say, in a year or so, or maybe a little less. And we'll hit the road sometime after that. But May is the time when we're looking to get in the studio again."

The new Dream Theater album will not be conceptual like 2016's The Astonishing was, according to previous interviews with Petrucci, who seems to be the keeper of the info currently.
