SONIC YOUTH's Thurston Moore Says Black Metal is "Music Made By Pussies of the Lowest Order"

Is he trolling?

Is he trolling?

Is Thurston Moore trolling us? The (former?) Sonic Youth frontman has an affinity for metal as evidenced by this incredible photo of him standing with Minor Threat's Ian McKaye holding the excellent Swedish Death Metal book:

Moore also joined black metal "supergroup" Twilight for their most recent record, playing guitar in the band. So, he knows his shit.

While promoting his new album, The Best Day, Moore was asked about his experience playing black metal and if it rubbed off on him for his new album, and his response was:

Black Metal is music made by pussies of the lowest order, and we felt it was necessary to investigate this aberrant anti-music behaviour. We feel like the sound and attitude of black metal is a loss of self, life, light and desire in a way where it becomes so negative that a whole new bliss arrives where we become super pussy.

To me, it sounds like Thurston is trolling to get his quote out there and offend as many black metal elitists is possible. In essence, he's stealing our very own King of Metal, Dave Hill's act.

We applaud you Thurston, for your grade A trolling.
