Ronnie James Dio Dies At Age 67

Despite denial of rumors late last night, Ronnie James Dio passed away today at age 67. This was confirmed by wife and manager, Wendy Dio, who has posted this statement on Dio's official home page:
"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

Reports started to surface in late 2009 that the metal legend was diagnosed with stomach cancer. It seemed things were looking well, with Ronnie James Dio even appearing at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards last month to accept the award for best vocalist. The cause of death has yet to be officially announced, but one thing we're positive of is that the metal community has lost a true legend today. This is an absolute bummer to report, and on behalf of everyone at Metal Injection we'd like to send our condolences to his family and friends at this time.

My first introduction to metal was a copy of Live Evil by Dio/Sabbath. This is a sad day for metal. My heart goes out to his family and all the fans the world over. You may be gone but you will never be forgotten.

We lost a real legend, one of the genre's founding fathers so to speak. If 2009 was a year that slew rising stars and young heroes, 2010 might be a year of losing legends, knock on wood that it won't be.

I'm 36. Obviously people my age and older would be devastated by Ronnie's passing. I'm so glad that you younger people also realise the magnitude of our loss. Almost 20 years ago, critics said the likes of Dio were totally irrelevant to the kids of the future. You proved them wrong. Thank you.

This sucks beyond compare. However, given that this is DIO we're talking about- I'm sure he has simply worn out this plane of existence, and he's on his way to another dimension; ready to slay their demon lord and usurp the throne.
