BEYOND DISHONOR Twerkfunding: Are Stripclubs The New Key To Music Success?

I’m always intrigued when a young band finds new ways to successfully solve their funding problems.

I’m always intrigued when a young band finds new ways to successfully solve their funding problems, and in a climate where there are more Kickstarter and Indie-GoGo campaigns than ever, you have to wonder how do you stand out? That’s a question Trenton NJ’s Beyond Dishonor asked themselves, who found their success at a gentlemen’s club in Philadelphia.

Partnering up with Club Risque, the band has merged two forms of entertainment who share the same working hours and interests, and created a scene that surrounds the local business. They call it “twerkfunding”, but does it really work? The club is so thrilled they offer Beyond Dishonor the venue regularly to throw metal night shows they call "Boobs & Breakdowns", while the band themselves have gone on to fund recordings, videos and touring through this venture. Of course, the attendees get double the action as well, so everyone seems to win.

Beyond Dishonor frontman Reese Dunlap offers the band’s standpoint:

“Twerkfunding is fun and is as pointlessly silly as you think it is, but it's also much more – it's a band using the resources available to them to reach a goal, a goal that doesn't come free. From a random idea 5 years ago, to a relationship with management that borders on family, BEYOND DISHONOR and Club Risqué have actually created a SCENE on the second floor of the most unlikely of metal venues in Philadelphia. There is mutual respect – for the club, for the girls, and for the patrons alike, and it has helped to send BD out on the road, to pay for albums and videos, and likewise to dispel the notion that these clubs are dirty, low class and misogynistic-ly driven. Regardless of race, religion, sexual choices, or gender, you were given that backside, so shake what yo momma gave you. #twerkfunding”

Ultimately it sounds like a win for everyone involved including the attendees. We might have to make a trip to Philadelphia pretty soon!
