Praise Satan, it might actually happen. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The band has quite the impressive catalogue, and one release that holds a dear place in my heart is the Irony Is A Dead Scene EP, which featured Mike Patton on vocals. This was a one-off gig for Mike, as the band's original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis had quit recently, and this was before Dillinger found current frontman Greg Puciato. I think Patton's contributions left a lasting impression on the band, and it clearly paved the way for what their sound would evolve to on future releases. For years, I would get into 'what if' discussions with friends and a topic that always came up was "what if Patton and Dillinger did something?" I thought it would never happen, simply because Greg Puciato owns the vocalist spot in the band and has become a defining proponent of the Dillinger machine. But to paraphrase "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, just when I think I have all the answers, they change the questions! The question shouldn't have been Will Patton collaborate with Dillinger again?, but rather Will he collaborate with Ben Weinman? The answer, as of now, seems to be "it's in the works." Holy shit!
You see Ben was asked recently if the band would ever collaborate with Mike Patton again, and the answer we got was unexpectedly awesome. It was a video interview, but my buddy Axl over at MetalSucks was nice enough to transcribe it, so here is the ole C+P:
“I don’t think as Dillinger, as a band [we'll work with Patton again], but I’m probably going to be doing some project with him. I’m actually working on something right now. It’s in the works, there’s some things in the works… It’s not a secret, it’s just kind of in the early stages of… we don’t know exactly what it’s would it to be. So it’s very early stages of development.”
So that pretty much sounds like they've talked about doing something together, and possibly sent some tracks back and forth to each other. Ben stressed that this is in the very early stages, so this could fall apart, but I sincerely hope it doesn't.
If you seriously haven't heard Irony Is A Dead Scene, and happen to be a fan of either Patton or Dillinger, you are doing yourself a great disservice by not having it in your collection. Here is the opening track from the EP, "Hollywood Squares"…
