Fred Armisen's New Favorite Death Metal Band is ABYSMAL DAWN
Fred Armisen is a man who enjoys to rock. He has a great comedy special exclusively about drumming, for drummers, streaming on Netflix. He's the band leader for Late Night with Seth Meyers, cameo'd in a Red Fang video and on his show Portlandia, he featured legendary cameos from Danzig and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme.
But how did Armisen end up at the concert of Los Angeles death metal act Abysmal Dawn? We spoke with Abysmal Dawn frontman Charles Elliot who gave us the inside scoop.
Turns out the band ran into Armisen at LAX, Los Angeles' international airport, as they were about to board for their South American tour. The band noticed Armisen noticing all of their gear and struck up a conversation with the actor.
Abysmal Dawn informed Armisen they were on their way to play festivals in Santiago, Chile and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Coincdentally, Armisen told the band that he was on his way to Santiago as well to film for his upcoming Spanish-language HBO series, Los Espookys – which Armisen is writing and producing.
The band's drummer, James, has another link to Armisen, as James is featured in the high school drumline for the Portlandia intro. Armisen gave the band his e-mail address and they told him they would invite him out to the Santiago show.
They did and he responded that he was coming. He showed up and watched the entire set from the side of the stage. Elliot remarks that the Santiago crowd was insane. After the show, Elliot notes that Armisen had a "genuine look of amazement and enjoyment on his face," and told the band how much he loved the set and praised the drumming.
Fred Armisen may have not been a death metal fan before that show, but he sure as hell might be one now.
