For the scarce bands that go out on top, there are even fewer who split up before they reach their potential, leaving the rest of us to wonder what could have been while raising horns to the one or two albums that they left us. This brings us to SIKTH.

Conceived in the same kingdom that brewed IRON MAIDEN and NAPALM DEATH, SikTh blended the former&#039;s gradiosity and progressive edge with the latter&#039;s abrasivenesses and hectic shifts. But from the first listen, SikTh&#039;s &quot;Death of a Dead Day&quot; sounds like it came from a universe where matchcore bands gave their hooks room to breathe, progressive bands didn&#039;t get bogged down with proficiency and death metal bands focused on clean, melodic songs more than speed. Sure, all of that happens sometimes, but how often do you hear it all on the same record?

After several EPs and a full-length on  Gut Records, SikTh enjoyed an appearance at Download, a Japan tour with ANTHRAX, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and sold-out U.K. tour. But SikTh&#039;s defining moment arrived on the otherwise uneventful 6/6/06, when they treated the masses to Death of a Dead Day. Opening with the frantic one-two punch of &quot;Bland Street Bloom&quot; and &quot;Flogging the Horses,&quot; instant riffs contort under relentless drumming and yelping vocal spasms. Guitarists PIN and DAN WELLER verge on beating the lives out of their instruments, but that&#039;s only apparent after multiple listens--there&#039;s too much to dissect on Death of a Dead Day for concern over how it was made. For such an aggressive band, SikTh are never overwhelming, and even moments like the blaring &quot;Another Sinking Ship and the almost unimaginable &quot;Summer Rain&quot; sound organic. Perhaps that&#039;s because Death of a Dead Day never sounds like it&#039;s imitating anything else

Despite all its compositional and stylistic shifts, Death of a Dead Day never stops being catchy. This is the kind of band that makes you inadvertently headbang and pump your fist. The haunting &quot;In This Light&quot; sounds like it crawled off of a side of TOOL&#039;s Ænima, and the spoken interlude &quot;Mermaid Slur&quot; sports the band&#039;s NICK CAVE influence almost as much as their &quot;Tupelo&quot; cover on their first album, The Trees are Dead &amp; Dried Out...Wait for Something Wild. The melodic &quot;Where Do We Fall&quot; even indicates at future radio success, if GOJIRA covering QUEENSRYCHE ever had a chance  on your FM dial.

When it turns out that Martians have been existing among metalheads, I&#039;ll nominate SikTh as Exhibit A. How else to explain the way that they leave everyone else in the dust--most death metal bands sound generic next to the staggering &quot;As the Earth Spins Round&quot; and the showiest prog-metal theorists get shown up all over &quot;Way Beyond the Fond Old River.&quot; Remember that kid you went to school with, who seemed like he was better than you at everything without even trying? Imagine that that guy was actually cool, and that he made a metal record.

The recent success of prog-inflicted bands like MASTODON makes me wonder what kind of audience an &#039;09 release from SikTh would find. Their break-up is a loss to the rest of us, but even if they never record another note, SikTh could be remembered as the best British metal band of the decade.</itunes:summary>

Scared off by the word &quot;country?&quot;  Most people were, and despite featuring the last new music from Dimebag, Rebel Meets Rebel&#039;s only album has barely made a dent on the world&#039;s radar since it came out in 2006. But check it out and you&#039;ll be rewarded with one of the best party albums in recent memory.


On a break from Pantera, Dimebag, Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown and country&#039;s reigning dirty old man Coe formed a country metal alliance. It sounded nothing like Coe or Pantera&#039;s previous music, nothing like Metallica&#039;s misguided stabs at country on Load and nothing like Hank Williams III (who makes an awesome cameo on &quot;Get Outta My Life,&quot; mayhaps the great metal tell-off song.) Rebel Meets Rebel works because it doesn&#039;t try to be country or metal--just blur the bold line between the two onto an awesome hard rock record.

The simple, unbearably catchy opener &quot;Nothin&#039; to Lose&quot; sets the pace--country-based compositions played with the volume and extremity of one of the greatest metal bands in history. Sex, drugs and heavy metal cowboy formulas are played up to the point of hilarity on &quot;Cowboys Do More Dope,&quot; &quot;One Nite Stands&quot; and the title track, the later being a Black Tooth Grin-drenched hoedown based around an electric violin progression that trumps the one in Starship Troopers. The climactic fiddle solo sounds like Satan (the original cowboy from hell) getting his revenge after that whole incident with Johnny down in Georgia.

Dimebag, Rex and Vinnie all sound liberated on Rebel Meets Rebel, free to make southern fried, melodic and shit-kicking metal tunes that would not have flown on a grim Pantera album. The confrontational yet good-natured attitude of the band serves as an ideal epitaph for Dimebag. Just as Bon Scott sounded like the party-hearty, patron-decking king of the tavern on his final AC/DC album, Dimebag goes out with all guns blazing, ripping a spellbinding solo on &quot;Heart Worn Highway,&quot; trading outlaw toasts with Coe and dropping bar-fight worthy riffs over nearly every measure. Slower numbers like the spacey, ominous &quot;Arizona Rivers,&quot;  showcase his versatility, hinting that Dimebag had barely started to explore his unbounded talents.

It&#039;s not a perfect album. &quot;Cherokee Cry&quot; only proves that RMR should&#039;ve left the social commentary to Maiden on &quot;Run to the Hills,&quot; and &quot;No Compromise&quot; is too much of an alright thing. But the whole 40-minute album is ideal for a good evening of painting the town red, or for remembering one of the great figures in metal.</itunes:summary>

Imagine that level of subtlety and discretion applied to &quot;Evil Dick,&quot; &quot;KKK Bitch,&quot; or &quot;Momma&#039;s Gotta Die Tonight.&quot; 

Body Count are often unjustly classified as a rap-rock precedent, only because they have a vocalist who moonlights as a rapper. In truth, Ice-T&#039;s talk-singing here is more like Mike Muir&#039;s than Zack de la Rocha&#039;s, an expansion of punk-metal and not a prototype for rap-rock. The most hip-hop thing about this album is its annoying tendency to put skits between a lot of the songs, mostly revolving around established facts (more black men in prison than in college, the media brushes over gang violence, etc.) or sounding like they were made up on the spot (South Central L.A. isn&#039;t like The Cosby Show, etc.) Even the best lyrics (check out &quot;Bowels of the Devil&quot;) sound like they were ripped from a high school bathroom stall.

Logically, this album should suck. And it some ways it does. But I can&#039;t stop listening to it.

The deceptively simple music, written by guitarist/producer Ernie C., has no regard for chops or song structure but somehow blasts from the speakers no matter how low you turn it down. Most of the songs sound like they&#039;ve never been rehearsed, giving the album a spontaneous, live-in-the-studio feel that few of Body Count&#039;s peers ever captured.

Like the Sex Pistols, Body Count created simple music that was somehow impossible for anyone to emulate. The almost stupidly ham-fisted choruses of “There Goes the Neighborhood” and “Bowels of the Devil” will have you singing along on the first listen. Even the anti-drug power ballad &quot;The Winner Loses&quot; (sample lyric: &quot;Next thing I knew my friend&#039;s life was lost--NOOO!!!!!!&quot;) is pretty catchy, and it features a surprisingly Slash-like solo from Ernie C. The latter song is also a standout on an album that really sticks to its formula--a few power chords rehashed again and again over Ice-T singing about Body Count, cops, Body Count, racists, Body Count, motherfuckers, Body Count, street life, Body Count, cops, Body Count, racists...repeat.

Of course, Body Count is mainly remembered for &quot;Cop Killer,&quot; a punk-metal scorcher that was vocally scorned by Charlton Heston, Dan Quayle and other upstanding citizens until the song was removed from all new pressings of the album. Nearly lost among the censorship crusades was the fact that &quot;Cop Killer&quot; is an awesome piece of music, a crazy, scary, potent and infectious punk-metal anthem packed with machine gun drumming, an unforgettable chorus and the best hook on the entire album.

Like a good horror flick, every single thing about Body Count is over-the-top. It may not be high art, but if you ever want a cartoonish thrill ride, jam-packed with sex, drugs and violence, this is as good as it gets. Whether banging &quot;Tipper Gore&#039;s two twelve-year-old nieces&quot; in &quot;KKK Bitch,&quot; burning and dismembering his racist mom in &quot;Momma&#039;s Gotta Die Tonight&quot; or going out  Beelzebub&#039;s anus is &quot;Bowels of the Devil,&quot; Ice-T walks the line between campy and creepy like a musical Tobe Hooper, while his band kicks out some grimy thrash metal jams in the vein of Motörhead. It&#039;s a cheap thrill, but it&#039;s consistent. 

Since their first album, Body Count have toured sporadically and released a few records, none of which have the potency of their debut. Today, Body Count are more likely to be brought up in First Amendment debates than metal history discussions. That&#039;s a fact that you should help remedy by picking up their first album.</itunes:summary>
