MEGADETH take us to the Killing Ro-oa-oa-oad

Posted on February 2nd, 2009

dave_mustaine1Superbowl got you down? Lost your mind? Lost all your money? Well, maybe Dave Mustaine and Co. can help you this fine Monday morning. It feels like Spring in New York City, and I'm in a MegaDave kind of mood. Check out this incredibly infectious track from the band's Youthanasia release. It is sure to put you in a good mood as well (unless you don't like Megadeth, in which case you are already a miserable person!)

DAUGHTERS provide a little Monday aural avant-grind

Posted on January 26th, 2009

daughters

Providence, RI natives DAUGHTERS is a band that eats, sleeps and breathes Rock 'N' Roll. The band is labeled as punk, grindcore, mathcore and a ton of other labels but to me it is a genre I like to call avant-grind. They're in, they're out and you don't know what hit you. Check out one of my favorite songs by the band, Jones from Indiana off Canada Songs and hopefully it'll get you up and going on this Monday.

Members of CYNIC & TEXTURES team up for metal fusion orgasm

Posted on January 19th, 2009

3203815207_e220abffe6_oSorry for being a little late with this week's Monday Wake Up Call. My day job actually gave me work to do (you didn't think MI was a full time gig did you?). Anyhoo, over the weekend, Blabbermouth posted about an amazing project called EXIVIOUS.

The band seems to be a side project, and features in its rank some heavy hitters in the tech-metal scene: Tymon of CYNIC on guitar, CYNIC bassist Robin Zielhorst, TEXTURES drummer Stef Broks and Michel Nienhuis (ex-SENGAIA) on guitar. The band is filled with a bunch of metal and jazz fusion nerds, so naturally they are going to try to mold the two concepts together and from what I heard so far, it's definitely something worth checking out. The band plans to release an album later this year DIY with only 1000 copies of their CD being printed, each featuring unique artwork. Pretty interesting concept for a DIY release. The band posted the first track of their upcoming self-titled release over the weekend on their official website which you can stream below. Prepare to have your face melted…

The best flamenco cover of METALLICA's "Orion" you'll ever hear!

Posted on January 12th, 2009

rodrigo_y_gabriela200I hate being hungover on a Monday morning. Last night, Frank and I checked out Skeletonwitch and Cannabis Corpse. The show was awesome and expect some sick live footage in the near future. Since my ear buds are still coming down from the thrashing they received, I thought I'd listen to undoubtedly the most metal flamenco band of all time, Rodrigo y Gabriella. This acoustic duo have cited metal bands like Metallica and Testament as major influences. They even jammed with Testament guitarist Alex Scolnik. On their self-titled release, they included a brilliant acoustic cover of Metallica's Orion. Check it out below.

Listen to ORGONE — You Will Not Regret It!

Posted on January 5th, 2009

ORGONEWhy can't New Year's break last another week? I only wish! But, alas there is work to be done, money to be made and of course, metal to be heard. For the first "Monday Wake Up Call" of 2009, I figured I would post an unsigned band that caught my ear during the holiday break. This week's Wake Up Call is Pennsylvania's own ORGONE (which means universal life force…deep right?).

This band is absolutely killer. They will rip your face off, and then calm you down with some lovely melodies. These guys pack all the punch of a grind/tech-death band and even leave room for ISIS-like interludes. The band was kind enough to provide us with the title track from their upcoming self-produced album, The Joyless Parson, a 10 minute opus that will send you through a range of emotions and definitely wake you. Check it out below (and check out the lyrics). If you like what you hear, keep checking the band's MySpace page as they will constantly be adding new songs from the album, which is set to release in March.

(Special thanks to The Apparatus for introducing me to the band)

LAMB OF GOD post "Contractor" – a new studio track (Hear it here!)

Posted on December 21st, 2008

Oh fuck yes! We're doing this week's Monday Wake Up Call a little early (Sunday night to be precise) because we simply couldn't wait to unleash this to the masses. Over the weekend, LAMB OF GOD's European label, Roadrunner UK created a page where users could sign-up to receive a free download of the new LoG single "Contractor". As of this writing, that page is down. Clearly, the site was not ready for the massive amounts of LoG traffic coming its way. But one fan clearly signed up in time and did the entire metal world a huge favor by uploading a pretty decent rip of the song to Youtube. So check it out below, and be careful not get any whiplash!

This track comes off LAMB OF GOD's upcoming release, Wrath due in stores February 24th.

Tom Araya perfectly explains how I feel this Monday morning

Posted on December 1st, 2008

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Four day weekends rule! I got hammered, did a bunch of personal shit, oh and did I mention I got hammered? But man, waking up today sucked big balls! In fact, the only way to truley describe how I feel is with the wise sounds of SLAYER's Angel of Death, in particular, 20 seconds in is exactly how I feel right now…

ION DISSONANCE can wake a deaf person up

Posted on November 24th, 2008

ion_dissonance

Woo, three day work week!! Who else is pumped? I thought to start us off this Monday (or if you really think about it…its kinda like today is Wednesday) we should start with a bang, that bang being Montreal noise-metal experts, ION DISSONANCE. Their 2003 release Breathing Is Irrelevant is quite possibly one of my favorite releases of this decade. It just doesn't let up. You could be walking your dog, or standing on a crowded train, and this album will just instinctively make you want to mosh. And, I don't even like moshing! Check out my favorite track from the record, "The Death of One Man is a Tragedy, The Death Of 10,000 Is A Statistic"…which is also a deep title, if you think about it.

Wake up to some battle metal from TURISAS

TURISAS

Hung over from the weekend? How about a little battle metal from Finnish viking metal band, TURISAS. We have an exclusive live track of the band performing The Dnieper Rapids live. The band is currently raping and pillaging their way across the United States with DRAGONFORCE so make sure to check them out. If you need some convincing, check out the hordes of live footage we have of the band.

Who needs coffee when you have TOMBS?

Posted on November 3rd, 2008

One of the bands that really stood out during CMJ a few weeks back, was Brooklyn's own TOMBS. This non-stop aural assault had the jaded industry crowd headbanging along with the non-industry heads in attendance. We just uploaded two live videos of the band, and if you are having trouble waking up this Monday morning, maybe this will help…

Free MP3 download of new song from THE FACELESS

Posted on October 27th, 2008

It's Monday morning, the weather is changing and I'm feeling sick. But luckily, we have a free download of the new song by THE FACELESS for you to wake you up, cause it's certainly keeping me awake right now. The new album is quite amazing (we got an advanced listen), comes out in 3 weeks (11/11) and you should probably get it. For now, check out the new track below, and if you haven't checked out our live video of (in my opinion) the best song on the album, Xenochrist, something is wrong with you!

ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF Have The Right To Arm Bears

Posted on October 6th, 2008

Electro Quarterstaff

The beauty of leaving your iPod on shuffle sometimes is that a band you really haven't listened to for a while comes on and then you go "Fuck man, I haven't listened to this in a while, this is awesome." I found myself is such a situation a few weeks ago, when the song "The Right To Arm Bears" off of ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF's amazing LP Gretsky popped in the rotation, and I have not been able to take the album out of my rotation for a while. If you aren't familiar with ELECTRO QUATERSTAFF they are a five-piece all instrumental band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Yes, 5 members, no vocalist…which means, they have an extra shredder in the band to blow your fucking mind. Check out the MP3 of The Right to Arm Bears below, and I promise it will wake you up from your Monday morning haze. Then, head over to their Myspace page and listen to more shred-tastic goodness!
