While we were on vacation in London, a fine gentleman named Ben let us shack up in his apartment. Ben played his current band for me, London hardcore act SANTA KARLA and I was (not-so) surprised to hear they rule. It's always cool when a friend plays you his band's song and they don't suck. You don't have to go through that awkward "Uhh yea, that sounds great" schtick.

Hardcore is a bit misleading, as there are hints of black metal and other metal sprinkles in there. The guitars are thick, the vocals are aggressive and the drums keep on crashing. Ben was kind enough to give us a free MP3 off their recently released demo, which you can download/stream below. If you dig the band, make sure to add them on MySpace as the band is currently working on their first full-length. So expect more rad music from them soon. You've been warned.</itunes:summary>

Y'all should know the score by now. I'm Grim Kim, I probably hate your favorite band, and I'm going to spend the next couple paragraphs telling you exactly why you NEED to be listening to whatever band I've decided to write about this time. Got it? Good. I just got back from Obscene Extreme Fest in the Czech Republic, and my need for speed is still in hyperdrive. No time for sludge this week. Less talk, more grind!

Meet Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation, an originally all-girl (they've recently added a male guitarist) grindcore quartet based outta Tokyo, Japan. These chicks make Angela Gossow look like your sweet Auntie Mabel, and shit all over the idea that "girls can't play metal."

While it's true that most of the pretty, perfectly-made up faces you see splashed across the covers of this-and-that magazine and simpering out at you from whatever "metal" countdown show Fuse's decided to do this week can't scream a lick, and invariably front commercial-type bands that can only be described as "godawful," there's always the odd group of women out there tearing shit up and holding their own in the testosterone-fueled world of extreme metal. I'm not much of a feminist, but I do hate seeing the sort of role models younger chicks are exposed to. How is my little sister ever going to get into good tunes if the most "extreme" band she can relate to is Lacuna Coil or fucking In This Moment - bands that say, "It's okay for girls to like metal, but only if it's melodic and inoffensive and accessible; leave the heavy stuff to the boys, dear, and make sure those pants make your ass look good"?

FUCK. THAT. The ladies of Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation (who will henceforth be referred to as "F.I.D." because their full name is impossible to type properly on the first try) are easy on the eyes, but focusing on that will leave you stranded about as far from the point as you can get. The point, my friends, is total fucking destruction. F.I.D. play fast, filthy, furious grindcore in the vein of Insect Warfare, Phobia, and Captain Cleanoff that verges on powerviolence in its pure disregard for the listener's eardrums and flirts with the occasional Corrupted groove. At times echoing her better-known warsisters in Gallhammer, Makiko's vocals veer between high-pitched, frenzied shrieks and a knuckle-dragging death grunt that would do their countrymen in Coffins proud, while ostage, the band as a whole positively vibrate with kinetic energy (if you were lucky enough to catch 'em at Maryland Death Fest 2007, you're sure to remember their jaw-dropping performance). Two demos and a split 7" with Insect Warfare later, F.I.D. have finally scraped together a full LP's worth of primal crusty goodness; the self-titled record is available from Bizarre Leprous Productions, and is WELL worth the cash.

Oh, and as far as the name goes? They don't know what it means, either.

Play fast or die.

I seriously am blown away by how proficient every member of that band is. They are a well oiled machine. And really, I need to give a shout out to bassist Mike Flores. He absolutely rapes his bass to the point where I just assume that he must be very good at pleasuring women. Am I right or am I right? So for today's wake up call, here is the song they closed with, off their killer CD, Informis, Infinitas, Inhumanitas here is Portal...

The thing that blew Frank away is they use samples and don't play to a click. After the show, guitarist Michael Keane told us he is a tempo nazi, and they try to be extremely precise with their timing. I felt this morning, I'd play the song they closed with on this tour. Metal Nick also posted a live video of "Legions of the Serpent" this weekend, so check that out as well. Oh my fucking Buddah! MASTODON absolutely destroyed the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night. Their 90 minute set started with the band plowing through their most recent prog-opus, Crack The Skye from beginning to end as advertised, and then played an additional 40 minutes of old classics in reverse-chronological order starting with tracks off Blood Mountain, then moving to a few from Leviathan and closing with today's wake up call, March of the Fire Ants. This band is too good for words to describe. If they are playing around your town, you need to go see them.

We got the chance to interview Brann and Troy before the show, so look out for that in the next couple of days. If this isn't enough 'don for you, check out a video we found after the jump...

Late last week, I was having the shittiest day, and had my music on random and Deadwater Drowning's "Bliss From a Dead Embrace" came on and I was reminded of how much this band kicked fucking ass.

Bread out of the early 2000's Massachusetts metalcore scene, these guys basically the blueprint for every current deathcore band out today. The only release the band has is a 2004 self-titled EP, and it is 21 minutes of sheer relentlessness. Some familiar names fills the ranks: the infamous Nate Johnson handling vocal duties (who went onto play with THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD and PREMONITIONS OF WAR) and on guitar Johnny Fay (of THE RED CHORD fame) and Seth Coleman (who then joined THE ACACIA STRAIN). Sometimes it's the bands that only release one blip of music that get the most notoriety because they never had a chance to fuck it up. This is definitely one of those bands. If you enjoy heavy music, I urge you to pick up their self titled EP. This track will surely convince you: </itunes:summary>

The band seems to be a side project, and features in its rank some heavy hitters in the tech-metal scene: Tymon of CYNIC on guitar, CYNIC bassist Robin Zielhorst, TEXTURES drummer Stef Broks and Michel Nienhuis (ex-SENGAIA) on guitar. The band is filled with a bunch of metal and jazz fusion nerds, so naturally they are going to try to mold the two concepts together and from what I heard so far, it's definitely something worth checking out. The band plans to release an album later this year DIY with only 1000 copies of their CD being printed, each featuring unique artwork. Pretty interesting concept for a DIY release. The band posted the first track of their upcoming self-titled release over the weekend on their official website which you can stream below. Prepare to have your face melted...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Why can't New Year's break last another week? I only wish! But, alas there is work to be done, money to be made and of course, metal to be heard. For the first "Monday Wake Up Call" of 2009, I figured I would post an unsigned band that caught my ear during the holiday break. This week's Wake Up Call is Pennsylvania's own ORGONE (which means universal life force...deep right?).

This band is absolutely killer. They will rip your face off, and then calm you down with some lovely melodies. These guys pack all the punch of a grind/tech-death band and even leave room for ISIS-like interludes. The band was kind enough to provide us with the title track from their upcoming self-produced album, The Joyless Parson, a 10 minute opus that will send you through a range of emotions and definitely wake you. Check it out below (and check out the lyrics). If you like what you hear, keep checking the band's MySpace page as they will constantly be adding new songs from the album, which is set to release in March.

(Special thanks to The Apparatus for introducing me to the band)

Before Peter Steele was singing about shades of lipstick and covering Neil Young, he was in one of my favorite thrash bands of all time, CARNIVORE. If ever there was a prototype for the perfect 80s thrash band, I think these guys fit that description to a t. Speedy guitars? Check. Misogynistic and psuedo-racist lyrics? Oh hell yea. Pig heads and raw meat flying around on stage? Check! If you haven't been exposed to this awesome band, definitely pick up their two CDs (Self-Titled and Retaliation). Your neck will never be the same!

For now, check out one of my favorite tracks from the band, Angry Neurotic Catholics off of their Retaliation album, which much like last week's Wake Up Call, starts with a bellowing scream...

Woo, three day work week!! Who else is pumped? I thought to start us off this Monday (or if you really think about it...its kinda like today is Wednesday) we should start with a bang, that bang being Montreal noise-metal experts, ION DISSONANCE. Their 2003 release Breathing Is Irrelevant is quite possibly one of my favorite releases of this decade. It just doesn't let up. You could be walking your dog, or standing on a crowded train, and this album will just instinctively make you want to mosh. And, I don't even like moshing! Check out my favorite track from the record, "The Death of One Man is a Tragedy, The Death Of 10,000 Is A Statistic"...which is also a deep title, if you think about it.</itunes:summary>

The beauty of leaving your iPod on shuffle sometimes is that a band you really haven't listened to for a while comes on and then you go "Fuck man, I haven't listened to this in a while, this is awesome." I found myself is such a situation a few weeks ago, when the song "The Right To Arm Bears" off of ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF's amazing LP Gretsky popped in the rotation, and I have not been able to take the album out of my rotation for a while. If you aren't familiar with ELECTRO QUATERSTAFF they are a five-piece all instrumental band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Yes, 5 members, no vocalist...which means, they have an extra shredder in the band to blow your fucking mind. Check out the MP3 of The Right to Arm Bears below, and I promise it will wake you up from your Monday morning haze. Then, head over to their Myspace page and listen to more shred-tastic goodness!</itunes:summary>
