Here's Your First Taste Of New DREAM THEATER Music [UPDATE: Maybe Not!]

Update: Junkie SearchAndDestroy rightfully points out that this track is actually off James LaBrie's MullMuzzler album (on which Mike Mangini plays) and the track is called "Venice Burning"

Have you guys heard any new Dream Theater yet? No, I don't have an advance copy, but a few days ago brand new Dream Theater music had surfaced on Youtube in a very peculiar manor. As you may know, the band's upcoming album titled A Dramatic Turn of Events is set for release on September 13th, and is still currently being mixed by Andy Wallace. In addition to a few LP highlights, Youtube user (and possible Roadrunner employee) BruceRoadrunner uploaded an un-mixed track off the record called Breaking All Illusions in it's entirety, which leads me to believe this is a preview from the label, and not a leak.

UPDATE: This song actually appears on James LaBrie's MullMuzzler album (on which Mike Mangini plays) and the track is called "Venice Burning"

Call it what you will, the important topic here is the music itself. I for one, am pleasantly surprised how reminiscent the music sounds to earlier Dream Theater records. I had my reservations concerning Dream Theater's writing these days, especially with new drummer Mike Mangini on board, but considering my discomfort with their last few releases I personally think this is some of the best composition I've heard from the DT camp since 2003's Train of Thought. Maybe it has to do with the spirit of new blood in the band? Maybe DT feels they have something to prove in their post-Portnoy era? There is no way of telling what the rest of the record sounds like, and it's a bit too early to give it a full review, but I'm certainly interested in checking out the rest of the record coming this September. If you haven't heard the unmixed song yet, check it out below.
