Mastodon are all about pushing limits, but with their new single, "Sultan's Curse," they go back to what works well. Great, proggy riffs, and awesome hooks.

It's the opening track on the band's new album, Emperor of Sand, which will be released on March 31 via Reprise Records. The album is available for pre-order on Amazon and iTunes.
The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien, who also worked with them on Crack the Skye. Here's the tracklisting:

We've learned Scott Kelly will once again make an appearance on the album, and last month Brann Dailor told Rolling Stone that the album's central subject is a cancer patient:
"At the end of the story, the person simultaneously dies and is saved. It's about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that. I didn't want to be literal about it. But it's all in there. You can read between the lines."
