Funeral Doom Friday: FUNERALIUM Threaten Demise With A New Song, "Spit At My Face, I Will Pluck Your Tongue Out"

It is the weekend! Is there a better way to start it than with the latest installment of “Funeral Doom Friday?" This weekly column looks to shed some light onto some of the darkest, most depressing, and discordant metal out there. Funeral Doom stems from the deepest depths of Death-Doom and Dirge music. Each week, the goal is to highlight some of the newest music or rediscover classic works from some of the earliest bands and originators such as Australia’s Mournful Congregation, United States’s Evoken, UK’s Esoteric and the Finnish Thergothon. Feel free to share your opinions and suggestions in the comments!

Funeral Doom Friday in the past has written about the Weird Truth Productions label. The column's album of the year came from the label's mastermind and it also released another great album from Hyponic. So, when Weird Truth announced the new Funeralium album, Of Throes and Blight, the excitement was real. Weird Truth has its hand in many unique and extreme album releases. France's Funeralium certainly fits the bill. The Parisian quartet has been around since 2003 making a heinous blend of funeral doom. They now have a few albums and a demo to their name, including Of Throes and Blight, which comes out April 12. To celebrate its impending release, we have a brand new song from the album.

At over 23 minutes long, "Spit in My Face, I Will Pluck Your Tongue Out", is not an easy listen. It is also quite the mouthful. Yet, this song is, by all means, extreme. Marquis's primal yells are a sharp contrast to his vocal duties in Ataraxie. He hawks vile and malicious words of vengeance over a heavy drone from the guitars. Throughout much of the track, Funeralium utilizes negative space or extended bouts of minimal instrumentation. At times, it almost becomes a tortured a capella. There are also moments of threatening death doom in which the drums and guitars grow and pick up tempo. It consequently creates a panicked and tense period of time, particularly in the final third of the song. Here is an excerpt of the lyrics:

Enough is enough, I shan’t tolerate this anymore
I’ve been through too much, endured for too long
the countless army of vermin, anonymous and secure
One minuscule spurt after the other,
forming an ocean of unbearable foulness
A microb's bite, impossible to feel on its own
Repeated a million times, turning into an atrocious Leviathan of spite and envy
A megalopolis of cowardice, towering high in the crimson sky of my harassed soul
Now rise, on your feet, face me, brace yourself
The time has come, your day of Reckoning
Review your choices, smell your own trail of filth

Listen to the new song below. Funeralium is on Facebook where you can keep up with their latest news. Pre-order Of Throes and Blight at their Bandcamp page as well. Also, check out some of the other releases coming out on Weird Truth. Next week at this time, we will have a feature of another new album from the label, so stay tuned.
