Metal is no stranger to reveling in bleak themes. And there’s a certain weird joy in at least purging or parading these ideas. But when the material is black death from a historical perspective (not just metaphorical references), you get Throne of Heresy’s Decameron. You might recognize the title from the Giovanni Boccaccio novellas. And it’s like a Swedish death metal unit picked up the books and started paraphrasing sections for you in the most epic way.

Linköping, Sweden’s Throne of Heresy’s third outing sees them exploring and breaking through more boundaries. Decameron is the historical travelings of the black death in three chapters, starting in Asia and working its way into Europe. It’s more than just a death metal record, thought it is primarily such. While thematically bleak, the album is rich in composition. Folk/pagan elements work their way in and the album has a constant ambience of older times.

Grab a pair of headphones and take a trip back to bleaker times.
