IN FLAMES New Webisode Features New Song Teaser

Melodic metal pioneers IN FLAMES have finished recording their latest album, Sounds of a Playground Fading, and they have just released their 3rd webisode that was filmed during the recording process. Like nearly every band that has existed for more than 10 years, IN FLAMES have been the butt of criticism for an evolving sound.  I will admit, I personally am a fan of every album; however, my favorite is everything from Clayman and earlier.  Those early sounds are what originally attracted me to the band, but I can still say I enjoy their newest music although it is a bit different.

The latest webisode features some bits of the song "Puzzle" which has not been heard yet until now.  The video also features some more downtime footage like the guys getting tattoos.  I look forward to watching the webisodes to get a new glimpse of what the album will sound like.  With what I have heard, here is my take on things:

First, it should be noted that this will be the first IN FLAMES album to be written and recorded without founding member Jesper Strömblad.  From what I gather, this has left a majority of the song writing on the shoulders of guitarist Björn Gelotte.  I know many fans keep waiting and wishing the band to return to their "old" sound, but I feel pretty confident in saying that old IN FLAMES will remain in the past.  The clips I have heard thus far certainly have the vibe of everything post Clayman.  In my opinion, this means much more focus on vocals as singer Anders Friden takes more liberties and tries to expand his vocal abilities.  I also feel their newer music, while still melodic, is not as melody oriented as their older stuff since there seems to be a much bigger focus on the riff factor.  As a whole, I think the new album with be a continuation of the newer IN FLAMES sound, and although not the same as their old stuff, I still really dig it as all of their music has a signature IN FLAMES feel to it. Whatever that really is, I don't know exactly and can't put my finger on it, but they certainly do have their own sound.
