Decibel's Clips of the Month

Decibel Clips of the Month – April 2013: Videos from INCANTATION, TODAY IS THE DAY, SUFFOCATION and CATHEDRAL

Every month, Decibel scribe Shane Mehling reviews the four videos that appear in the mag under “Decibel’s Clips of the Month at Metal Injection.” This month, watch picks from Incantation, Today Is the Day, Suffocation and a classic clip from Cathedral.

Incantation “Invoked Infinity”

So, I’m pretty sure this is a how-to Incantation video. Like, just take some stills from this and you have an IKEA summoning video. Pg. 1) Put on cloak and blow dust to make another cloaked guy. Pg. 2) Hand over a chunk of something with cryptic image on it. Pg. 3) Stand in some water. Pg. 4) Stab bloody heart with dagger. But beforehand, make sure you have a bloody heart, a dagger, a skinned cow’s head, and definitely check that there’s dust in the box or you’re gonna have to do all this shit alone.

Today Is the Day “Sick of Your Mouth”

I read somewhere that this has the lyric “life is a toothache,” and while I was sure they misheard Steve Austin, during this psychedelic mélange of live footage, a woman eating a sandwich, flashing images of celebrities and literal shit in a toilet, they paste that exact phrase in big white letters right across the screen. So, yeah, he says it. There is absolutely no ambiguity to be had. Life is a toothache. That is apparently now what life is.

Suffocation “As Grace Descends”

I have conflicting emotions about a lighthearted Suffocation video. One on hand, I appreciate the playing in the center of a crowded bar while people go nuts, because holy shit, who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? On the other hand, if a meteor is minutes away from decimating all life on Earth, why are they still charging for drinks and a bouncer’s breaking up a girl fight? If you can’t count on a horrifying doomsday orgy from death metal fans, who else is gonna come through?

CLASSIC: Cathedral “Ebony Tears”

In the first live shot, two hands try to embrace and Lee Dorrian is like “Nooooo!” and breaks them apart before the band alternately rocks out through various camera effects and goes to a cemetery, where they seem super-disappointed. I think maybe they expected the director to have something cool for them to do, and when they showed up he was like, “Yeah, I really blew my wad with that hand idea. Maybe your looks of frustration will come off as brutal?” Well, they didn’t, my man. I’m sorry, but they did not.

We highly recommend skipping out on binge drinking tonight and using that money towards a one year subscription to Decibel Magazine!.
