New METALLICA Song, "Atlas Rise!," Unveiled. Stream It Now

Posted by on October 31, 2016 at 3:16 pm

Alright, can we all at least agree on the fact that Metallica's upcoming album Hardwired To Self-Destruct is going to be pretty awesome? The two tracks we've heard prior to this one have been astounding, and now we've got "Atlas, Rise!" Go ahead and stream the track below, and tell me that the riff right after the intro bit doesn't sound at least a little like something from Kill 'Em All.

I'd even go as far as saying that if the music on the album is consistently the same quality as the singles the band has been putting out, it'll be one of the best things they've ever done! Not to mention a solid return to form, in my opinion, anyway.

If you somehow missed their previous two singles, "Hardwired" and "Moth Into Flame," you can check those both out at their respective links right there.

Hardwired To Self-Destruct will be out in a variety of formats on November 18, and you can check out all of them (and their revisions) right here!

Metallica also posted this video showing the making of the single:

Lars looks so old on the drums. Especially in the beginning of the video. So old….

    • Jonny Brutal

So we hold that against him do we ? It's really all down to the songs and Metallica seem to have a bit of a rejuvenation.. I suppose it's like a middle aged man buying that Harley he's always wanted and actually being able to ride it and look cool. I think maturity on some rock stars suits them. Granted, Lars almost certainly pines for his full locks of hair as would we all but he still delivers the goods and without him there is no Metallica.

      • This guy ^^^^^^

        Thanks for your input.

    • Did you forget buddy?

Lars needs to use WAY less snare drums in the new songs and more fuckin toms. WTF Lars

    • DirtyLary

      Cause he is….?

  • Matt M.

After a few listens, this song is now my favorite of the three released.

  • vncleacid

honestly, i would be more hyped for this album if the artwork was better

    • Weak

      Sounds pretty shallow of you

      • Chris Davies

What ever had to the melodic sections they had in their songs? Most of their songs these days seem long for the sake of it with little variation. Anyway imo moth by far the best song so far, this being the worst. Also have you noticed the outro on all the three songs so far have been almost identical?

    • DirtyLary

Art work is the best thing so far. This song is forgettable unfortunately.

  • Gatenine Janssens

BORING. You can STILL hear the crappy Bob Rock influence in them. So sad. There is no "hook" what so ever.

    • Ken Kimmell

      kysmm

    • Genitals Janssens

      shut your dumb ass up

    • Dumb Ass Upstairs ^^^^^^

U want a hook then go listen to shit pop

      • Gatenine Janssens

You don't even know who Bob Rock is? WOW.

        • King Tool Upstairs ^^^^^^

Of course I know who Bob Rock is. Did I say I didn't know??? What a tool.

  • Cool as FUCK!!

Does anyone hear Iron Maiden at 4:45?

    • capssuck

yeah sounds a little like hallowed be thy name

    • Kennybad

      Yep!

    • Ivan Gonzalez

Yes! I was just thinking about how much the guitars sound like Iron Maiden's.

    • GinsuVictim

Definitely picked up on it. I googled "atlas rise iron maiden" and found your comment. :)

    • Sir Peras

      As I said: Major Scale?

    • ShadowⓋ

Yep, total Iron Maiden riffage rip-off everywhere in this one. Is there by chance a bit of plagiarism going on here?

  • John Corbin

It has a "Through The Never" type feel. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

    • GinsuVictim

I don't pick up on that at all.

  • All the riffs are safe… void of interesting parts… all these riffs are slow and over produced. its like they thought… "what should we do to come out of this riff into the next one?" Some yells out " 3 off beat hits! GO!". Metallica sounds like they get their riffs from WalMart… lowest quality riffs for .98 cents.

    • Les Portelli

Very much agree – sounds tired and uninspired

    • Metallica 4 Life

Remember Metallica's first 3 albums were written in the first 3 years. They wrote what felt good and flowed with it. Today Metallica has a riff bank with a collection of stuff over years and years. That is why the songs seem so choppy and dont flow because they literally just pick riffs out and slap them together and put snare hits as a transition. If they just wrote off thier head they could probably write a solid album in only a few months. It is understandable being a guitarist you dont want to lose those riffs you wrote, but you should look at the big picture as a whole and not a gumbo mess lol. Love u Metallica

  • Power2Glory

    Load of shit.

    A has been band

  • The One and Only Something

    Yeah…I'm a fan of this. That's all…

  • A Non A Moose

Best composition outta the 3 so far

  • Louis

Rather generic and very boring, and I think Lars forgot he has toms…every single fill is some crap snare fill. Such lazy laaaazy drumming and riff writing. But then again, it's a bunch of men in their 50's trying to be metal again, so it is what I'd expect. it's not the worst thing, but I feel like I've heard this a million times in my life.

    • Gorgalrl

Because he thinks every drum fill is supposed to be an accent to the rhythm guitar, so he does pretty much all of them following Hetfield's patterns like a fucking parrot that repeats every damn thing you say, only in an annoying fashion and at the same time.

    • Matt Ferrario

Its true all the cool riffs are smothered in loud snare hits and totally loses the groves. Why Lars? Why are you not trying when you are the hero for so many today? Did you give up or what? I will love Metallica forever but Lars should take this shit seriously 4 realz! m/

  • Gorgalrl

Snare snare pentatonic scale snare snare fast double bass run he'll never play perfectly live snare crappy pentatonic listless solo whoa a good harmony snare end. It's a nice song, but I can't recall another band that is so incredibly brought down by the drums and the soloing, holy crap. Lars is so stiff you'd think he's playing while wearing handcuffs.

  • Why is it so slow? This sounds like it should be about 10bpm faster to really kick ass. Its a great tune, but wrong tempo for the song.

    • GinsuVictim

They'll speed it up live eventually. They always do.

  • ziplock9000

Sorry but this is just very boring, unimaginative and generic. I'm seriously worried now as all 3 songs sound like this. What happened to Metallica since Death Magnetic?

  • Richard Sinclair

I don't wanna be THAT guy, but you guys seem a liiiittle too enthusiastic about this new Metallica album. I mean, it's cool people like it and that's fine, but none of the songs they've released are anything special. Sure, it might sound better than their stuff from a few albums past, but is that really much of an accomplishment? Point is, there's far better metal out there to be obsessing over

    • Les Portelli

      Yup

  • David Webb

The cover of their upcoming album reminds me of Crowbar's Odd Fellows Rest album.
Anyway,I for one think this album is going to be a lot better but Testament still has them beat,in my opinion.
If I may,I recommend getting both Metallica's Hardwired…To Self-Destruct album and Testament's Brotherhood of the Snake album and enjoy.

  • Man that was…rough. Lyrically there's nothing grabbing me. Musically it was enjoyable. Maybe it will grow on me. Maybe not. Maybe just another track.

  • Ăla-i tati

Listen to this on youtube at 1.25 speed. It's pretty damn good. The exact beat it was supposed to have

  • let'ssurfing

It's pretty good. Lost their danger though. By the numbers metal.

    • Les Portelli

This is exactly the problem, there is no danger in it anymore. When I was a kid I used to play Ride The Lightning with headphones on cause I was scared of my parents hearing it. Now my next door neighbor with four kids, a family wagon and a pool in his backyard asked me the other day if I heard the new Metallica songs! Nothing wrong with it, it's just become milquetoast and WalMart endorsed, NO DANGER, so basically innocuous pop music.

      • Sam Deratto

Here we go this idot with his "danger" again hahaha. Go watch a scary movie on Netflix or something. What an idiot!

        • Les Portelli

Lol. Another one of Metallica's social justice vagina warriors! That's ok dude, you're a metallica fan, can't expect much from you. Pretty funny guy though!

      • Jon m

Sounds to me like your looking for a reaction spending so much time talking shit say your mind then shut the fuck up no body what's to hear you bull shit go post love poems to you lame music pages

        • Les Portelli

Hey Jon m – you may want to check out that yeast infection you're suffering from, no worries, it's common with sensitive vaginas. Take care. Metallica fans, LOL.

          • Jon m

I was laughing hella hard for a minute cause you talk like you so bitch made. Then I started feeling hella bad when I checked out all your posts and responses I realized your just a punk kid by how you talk to people. Obviously your trying to make yourself sound hella tough by the way you talk to people noones even talking to you and hear you come using curse words and arguing with people just to sound bad. Lmao here's a little secret it's not working you sound ridiculous like a zit popping no hair on your ass kid. Real sorry bout talking to you like that little guy. Hope your mommy and daddy don't find out how your talking could get soap in your mouth and be careful might run into a man that don't care about you being a zit popping little homo and belt you ass like your daddy obviously should have done now go play with kids your own age you sound weak as heck the way you talk

          • Les Portelli

Wow Jon m! First off, thank you so much for that mind dazzling display of modern writing! Your eloquence and grace of skill knows no boundaries. I'm sure in years to come I'll understand the depth of your words. I can only imagine how envious Faulkner or Hemingway would be if they could only read such genius. Well done, bravo.

"I was laughing hella hard for a minute cause you talk like you so bitch made".

"like a zit popping no hair on your ass kid".

"Obviously your trying to make yourself sound hella tough by the way you talk to people noones even talking to you and hear you come using curse words and arguing with people just to sound bad".

Absolute genius! Shakespeare couldn't have said it better.

            Yours Truly
            Zit Popping Homo

p.s. just curious about the 'no hair on your ass' thing, are you saying that YOU have hair on your ass? I'm sorry to hear that.

  • Killby Jorge

I don't understand the haters? If you don't like it, move on and go listen to something you do like!

    • Les Portelli

Well in all fairness, I'm sure the haters do not understand all the sycophants. It goes both ways most of the time, nothing to complicated to understand, just opinions at the end of the day. But posting on things you don't like seem to me just as relevant as the posting on things you do like right? I mean, it is a relatively free country still yeah? I'm sure you wouldn't want to live in a world where everybody sucks each other's cock every minute and says nice and beautiful things all the time, that would be a little fake now, don't you agree?

  • BobC

Metallica lost me post And Justice For All (black album was ok)….. i have been just as critical as the next person but i have liked these 3 songs probably more than anything they have put out in a long time. Not to say that i am in love with the songs but they are getting my attention more than they ever have. In general, i give Metallica credit for doing what they love to do and enjoying it thoroughly which few people in this world can say. So i am going to take on the more "appreciative" stance with them and recognize them for who they are and what they have done for metal over the years. How's that for taking the high road? :)

    • GinsuVictim

Same as you. I really didn't like the black album when it came out, and didn't care for much after it either. There are a few tracks on Death Magnetic that are okay, but I'm really digging these new tracks more than expected. I look forward to the new album at this point.

      • BobC

Same… i am really curious to hear this thing in it's entirety. If anything it will get a lot of discussion!

  • Joe Manzella

Holy shit there's like 2 positive comments and then it's a cess pool of miserable haters. What happened to you guys? Show me where they touched you.

  • It is not Paranoia

Came here to see the hate of metal elitists and I'm not disappointed! And to balance it out, let me just say that I love the song. Metallica!!

Just shut the fuck up and enjoy that they're still here with us.

  • Les Portelli

No hate, just find it real funny how dangerous these guys were back in '84 and how tame and safe they've become. One of the greatest poems ever written:

    Dylan Thomas, 1914 – 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

    • Get A Clue Budzy

Its called they had have families now.

      • Les Portelli

'Its called they had have families now.' LOL, nice one.

That was actually my point there buddy! No reason you should lose your balls because you have a 'family' now. Just a little digging into music history will tell you that other musicians/artists managed to have families and continue to produce relevant and subversive work. Hopefully one day you'll understand this. Cheers.

        • This tool ^^^^^

You dont understand cause your probably some punk kid.

          • Les Portelli

LOL, well I guess it beats being a whiny fucking bitch like you, but for the record, I've got three kids asshole, not that's it's really any of your business, but nice try though. LOL

          • Les is crying now ^^^^^^^

I doubt it. I think your full of fucking shit. People dont stay angry there whole life you fuckin retard especially successful musicians like Metallica. Yeaahh lets be angry with success wooohooo. Get a life clown but most of all get a clue. I bet your always angry cuz your life sucks but not everyone is you.

          • Les Portelli

You sound very angry. You should see someone about that. LOL. Les is crying now! That's very profound and clever! Have a great day.

    • SiriQ

What a lame poem for bitches. METALLICA m/

      • Id rather not say

Thomas must have been drunk when he wrote this stupid shit.

        • Les Portelli

Yup, more than likely he did. But LOL, 'stupid shit'? Coming from a Metallica fan, that's comedy gold considering most Metallica fans are in fact stupid shits. Excellent, couldn't have put it better myself.

      • Les Portelli

SiriQ – Must be written for you then huh? Apparently it doesn't take much to offend the average Metallica vagina out there, thought you guys were all tough and hard? LOL.

    • james heidfeld

That poem would make a great song with het singing it to some classic metallica riffs and solos.

      • Les Portelli

Hey! Now that I agree with. Good one. These guys single handedly created a fucking genre, all I'm saying is I hold them to a higher standard. They should be making way more intense music.

  • Formerly Known as Brando

I cannot say the new stuff is bad, but it does feel uninspired. Boring perhaps. Maybe they just made an album off their jam sessions while trying to work on new material? If I a have a free hour to listen to Metallica, I'll probably stick to their classic stuff.

  • Kody

It's alright, but it's my least favorite of the 3 so far. I do agree, it's like Lars forgets he has toms. So much snare.

  • CaptainObvious1984

This sounds like a lot of riffs and not enough song. The verse is stale and monotonous. The pre-chorus is a great example of the newer elements in Metallica's writing that I think sound lame and out of character with the band. It sounds a lot like St. Anger actually. The chorus could have been great if James sang a better melody with more of a growl akin to "Rise, fall down, rise again" in Broken, Beat, and Scarred or the bridge section in My Apocalypse. His actual "melody" sounds more like shouting and it robs the chorus of its character.

I think they should have used the riff from the intro that sounds like it's off of Kill em' all as the main riff, and then used the next riff as the verse riff. That would have sounded so much better.

  • Jon m

Metallica kicks ass I've loved em from the first time I heard em in 84 I love the fact they try new things and are true artist I couldn't understand a painter painting the same picture over and over again for 30 years or a sculpture being redone over and over times change people change Metallica has changed they haven been the same 4 guys from the 80s there's only 2 original members left how could the sound be the same they have been doing their thing for how long? I know I have different likes ideas thoughts desires and wants from a year ago I'm a completely different person than I was 30 years ago. To me their still fucken bad ass love all their music and it takes me to some of the best times in my life their music helped me through some of the toughest times too fuck you dumb ass haters you have no loyalty and just wanna be negative because you haven tried anything new and your stuck in the same bullshit lives because your afraid of anything new or different if you don't like fine don't listen to em and damn sure don't try putting your hateful shit on other people's likes and joys shut your mouths and worry about you likes and instead of being hateful shit talking punks no one cares about your comments go post on bands you like instead guess your parents never taught you if you can't say something nice shut your mouth

    • MetallicA Real Fan

We live in the age of disrespect. People can not understand or grasp how important Metallica is. Especially the new punks like Les. Its ok because WE real fans will be the ones cheering on Metallica as they destroy our ear drums live when they come play for us. 4EVER LIVE METALLICA!!!! m/

      • Jon m

I agree 100% you hit it right on the nose I'm die hard till the end don't matter what any bitch ass punk says. I like em for my reasons not becous of what anyone else thinks. Rock on bro

    • JenkemKing

You should try and use punctuation for once you stupid piece of shit.

      • Jon m

You should try being a man and say that to my face. This stupid piece of shit is a U.S. Marine golden gloves boxer and would love to see you try and be tough to a real man face to face instead of being a pussy talking shit on line. Tell you what you give me a class in punctuation and I'll give you one in respect and hand to hand combat

  • Sir Peras

    I liked Hardwired…8/10
    Moth…7/10
    This one…I'm tryin' I'm tryin'…but it's tough…6.5/10

That Maiden sound everybody hears, isn't that just part of any generic major scale starting a tone from its root? I maybe wrong, but that's a library scale lol, it's for anyone to use : )

  • Richard Sinclair

Hmm. I actually don't mind this. That section starting at around the 4:20 mark is awesome. Kinda repetitive, but these guys are old as shit, so wasn't expecting something super technical. Though, someone needs to tell Lars he needs to stop using that fuckng snare so much. Jesus Christ.

  • Aldo Mejia

Good, it has a certain Maiden je ne sais pas quoi to it…….It's ok, I was not expecting Slaughter of the soul from At the gates style but still decent. Lets wait for the rest of the album.

  • hughes bouchard

this song have a sound like sometime oldschool kill em all.thats a good idea.very good track for lars.about the new 3 single track, thats the best song.good beats.cool

  • Jon m

Damn you guys. You should have giving me a heads up there's a little punk kid on this site running around thinking he's cool and tough running his little girl mouth to grown ups. Cause he's such a dork no other kids will play dolls with him. Go check out Les Portelli's other posts so obvious when you read his wanna be grown up talk. Feel hella bad for him when his mom founds out how he's been talking. Gotta let people there's underaged wannabes on here poor little guy

  • Jackson Andrew Lewis

It's good but feels like something is missing…..
