Attention, Stoners:

FINALLY! A compilation of doom/sludge bands covering PINK FLOYD

Posted on September 24th, 2008

Tribute to Syd BarrettHoly fuck! Somebody had the brilliant idea to get a bunch of stonery doomy sludge bands to cover a bunch of PINK FLOYD songs, arguably the greatest stoner band ever. The project is being called Like Black Holes in the Sky: The Tribute to Syd Barrett, and features covers by JESU, INTRONAUT, KYLESA, DREDG, UNEARTHLY TRANCE, YAKUZA and more.

Really, its a who's who of awesome bands covering (in this humble blogger's opinion) the awesomest band of all time. The fine people at Dwell Records have posted a player streaming this amazing CD in its entirety. Listen to this compilation in all of its awesomeness, after the jump…

This is great in theory, but the problem is that in being a tribute to Syd Barrett itonly covers one Pink Floyd record. And IMO not a very good one, and certainly not representative of the Floyd sound that people know and love.

Metal bands covering Wish You Were Here? Count me in. Animals? Fuck Yeah. Meddle? Well, Nachtmystium pretty much did that already this year and it was phenomenal (for other reasons than just the Floyd homage). But Piper at the Gates of Dawn? Yawn.

damn, this is fucking good. the piper at the gates of dawn is an awesome record in their era it was recorded, and i think it still sounds progressive today, Vince.

..i fucking love what yakuza did with lucifer sam. And hearing Dredg do something a cover of "Astronomy Domine" is heavenly.

3 was asked to contribute a cover to this compilation in June 2007. In Aug/Sept 2007 between filming their music video "All That Remains" in a castle on the Hudson River and driving down to Chapel Hill, VA to headline the ProgDay Festival 3 took the time out to record their cover of "See Emily Play." The drummer's baby daughter made her vocal debut on the track and they liked the final result so much that it was placed on the repackaged, Special Edition of their fifth album, The End is Begun. They also have it streaming on their myspace profile: http://www.myspace.com/3

I think y'all would really dig their cover. It definitely stays true to the original while still retaining qualities of 3's sound. Excellent cover.
