Like it or not, the two-thousand-teens are the decade of Prog. Those inclinations needn't be manifested by way of King Crimson clones – the split second time signature changes of tech death and the freeform deconstructionism of post-metal all owe a tip of the hat to the genre – but make no mistake: the 70's loom large [...]

It's always exciting when two people with a lot of money get pissed at each other over very trivial circumstances. Such is the case with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, who are both on a co-headlining tour currently, and things are not going swimmingly. Apparently, the two are dueling over set times. Oh, the tragedy!

Along with American juggernauts Cannibal Corpse and Sweden's Spawn of Possession, France's Gorod have helped finish off what has been one of the best months in death metal for some time. After the band's previous release, Process of a New Decline, the group found themselves with an overall more precise and musically demanding sound, but [...]

I love the “Sunlight Sound” as much as the next guy, but it’s been abused of late, invoked in hybrid procedures and put to nefarious use. In the end it’s a sonic tool; its glorious overdistorted virtues will only shine in the light of righteous riffs and songwriting. Horrendous have got those in spades. The [...]

In 2011 my attention span left the building. I lost interest in anything slower than a barreling freight train, and my enjoyment of the funereal frittered out. I didn't dig much in the way of doom, and sludge just didn’t move me like it used to. My tolerance of inexpert clean vocals completely evaporated. I [...]

In the heart of every music fan there is a shrine of sound, a cache of albums that comprise our sonic comfort zone. Most likely, these albums cannot be touched; any attempt by modern musicians to reproduce their ethos will produce derivative, hollow simulacra. Obsequiae have achieved the miraculous; they've recorded an album that strides [...]

It’s been almost impossible to avoid hearing about Dream Theater this past year if you’ve been exposed to metal in any way. The news of founding member and drummer Mike Portnoy’s departure from the band was one of the bigger pieces of news for the genre in 2010, leaving many of the band’s diehard fans [...]

Recently, while cleaning my house, blasting Rust in Peace and playing air guitar with the vacuum cleaner hose, I began to ponder metal's rejuvenating powers. I'm talking about music that effortlessly plies the art of shredding, wantonly ripping out ridiculous riffs and generally astounding us with its dexterity. This kind of metal makes me feel [...]

While in the process of reviewing this album, I had a bit of a debate with a good friend of mine about Trivium. He expressed his misgivings to me, the main one centered on the band’s polished or “semi-mainstream” sound. For him, the band lacks a genuine feel that he looks for when it comes [...]

When you review an album from one of your favorite bands, you're torn in a couple directions. In one sense, your passion for them motivates you to be very critical, while in another you still want to give them the benefit of the doubt. So let's get the obvious crap out of the way shall [...]

I've always thought of Krallice's music as a duel, envisioning the guitars feinting, parrying and maneuvering in abstract aural dimensions at ludicrous speed. About a minute into the first brief and unnamed track on Diotima, I realized this mental image would have to change. Diotima sounds like it was composed for a chamber orchestra. Although [...]

There is no doubt about it: Tool are a bunch of weirdos. They make weird videos to accompany their weird music. They're all about the mystique of being in a band. Well, they just got weirded out! At the Big Day Out Festival in Adelaide, Australia, Rammstein drummer Christoph "Doom" Schneider was invited out to [...]

The year is almost over, and this entry will be the final one in our Best of 2010 series as Noa checks in with her picks for the Top Albums of the Year. By: Noa Avior I always feel uneasy about compiling a top list of my favorite "something or other". I never really want [...]

by Graham "Gruhamed" Hartmann For a while now, Australian spectral doom band PORTAL has been seeing some serious underground support. Mostly through online metal forums and youtube, the band has developed an almost cult following of experimental metal enthusiasts. It's beyond difficult for an Australian act, especially an extreme metal act to make it over [...]

By Ben Apatoff Best-of lists are always fun to make, but they're usually a burden when finished and published. It's like getting a KORN tattoo that seemed like a perfect idea years ago, but now forces you to wear long sleeves every time you step out of the house. But lists are even fun in [...]
