CD Review: OWEN HART – Earth Control

owen_hart_coverlo

By Atanamar Sunyata

Flashback (eleven years) to college: sitting in a friend's apartment, drinking 40s and watching the “Over The Edge” WWF pay-per-view event.  Off-camera, wrestler Blue Blazer (Owen Hart) falls 78 feet to his death while attempting an aerial stunt.  Nothing will sober you up faster than death itself; I'll never forget that moment.  But what does the band at hand have to do with the man?  Besides a predilection for death, I don't have the slightest fucking idea.

If my first encounter with Owen Hart (the band) had been on paper, I would have been entirely incredulous.  The PR spiel describes a metal body welded to a hardcore chassis, dropping names like Converge, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Dropdead and Carpathian Forest.  Lucky for me, I threw on the album without the slightest bit of foreknowledge.  The instrumental intro track, “I Nameless” and subsequent “44 Black” basically say it all.  This is the real deal, a breathless metal annihilation and manic distillation of the finest riffs you'll hear.  Owen Hart radiate a belligerent alacrity, as if they'd been limbering up in your headphones, preparing to assault your ears before you even hit play.

Mike Portnoy Leaves AVENGED SEVENFOLD; Attempts & Fails to Rejoin DREAM THEATER

A few days ago Mike Portnoy formally announced he has fulfilled his agreement with Avenged Sevenfold and will no longer be with the band. Mike mentioned that he offered to extend his stay, but the band respectfully declined, saying it's time for them to move forward and find a permanent member.

You may remember Noa's editorial about how Avenged was like the young-girl rebound for Portnoy after breaking up with his old love. So, what does one do when getting dumped by your rebound? Go back to your old girlfriend, of course! In a post on his forum, Portnoy confirmed he reached out to his former bandmates: (more…)

Picking my personal Top 10 list ended up being much harder than I thought it would be. Before I started compiling the list, I feared I wouldn't even have 10 albums I remembered liking this year. After sorting through all my music, I found the opposite to be true. I could easily write a Top 30 list, but the headline wouldn't be as catchy, so I forced myself to pick 10 albums. Ultimately, it came down to which albums I listened to the most and was blown away by the most. Here is what I ended up with: (more…)

10. Mose Giganticus – Gift Horse

"A one man synth punk band" may sound like a joke to some, but I assure you there is nothing funny about the talented song writings of Matt Garfield. Between his unique vocal style, excellent relationship between harmony and groove, and some of the most clever use of a keyboards I've heard in years, this was an easy pick for my top 10. Gift Horse is such a fun record that really lends itself to any mood you may be in. Whether you're angry, happy, horny, or constipated this record has what you need! (more…)

10. Deathspell Omega – Paracletus

Although I find Deathspell Omega's music to be fascinating and cerebral, the question for me has always been how much I actually enjoy it. Paracletus affirmatively answers that question for my ears, combining absurd riffs, astral arpeggiations and corkscrew rhythms to create an aesthetically entertaining experience. This is an album to sit and marvel at while your mind tries to untangle its intricacies. Deathspell Omega have risen above their own obfuscation to craft an album of memorable songs.

GWAR Go Christmas Caroling

Who knew that even GWAR gets into the Christmas sprit, traveling to rural America to sing Christmas carols. Typical GWAR though, they can't do anything without some bloodshed. Anyway, this clip is hilarious and totally made my day. Don't forget, the band is hitting the east coast for some late-December dates. More info can be found here.

METAL INJECTION LIVECAST #96 – Vegetarian Dolphin

This week, Rob, 3D, Noa, Sid and Sean were joined by the extremely talkative Paul from TheApparat.us, who dropped some controversial bombs on the rest of us. At the start of the show, we heard what Rob's goatee sounds like when it's mic'd. We then talked about Sean's new tattoo, which you can see to your right. We received calls from junkies in Australia, India and a British sounding dude from Arizona proving we are an international Livecast. We spent some time on circumcisions. Also, a girl from California revealed way more about her ex-boyfriend that she would have liked to. Here is this week's playlist:

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Glass Tornado
Dillinger Escape Plan – Milk Lizard
Nails – Scum Will Rise
Blackguard – I Demon
Asshole Parade – Exploding Club Of Hearts
The Secret – Double Slaughter
Old Mans Child – In Torment's Orbit
Circle II Circle – Mirage

1) Betty White Goes Death Metal

Without a doubt, this was #1, both in views and "horns up." The clip, which originally aired on the Mother's Day episode of Saturday Night Live featured the entire cast signing the theme of The Golden Girls to Betty and her reciprocating with a crushing death metal cover. Everybody loves Betty White, even metalheads! (more…)

The Top 10 News Stories of 2010

As the year is comes to a close, we will be taking you through the Best of 2010. Over the next couple of days, expect top 10 album lists from most of our writers, as well as the top stories & videos of the year. These are the top 10 stories of 2010. Please note, these are not ranked or in any sort of order. These are just the 10 stories we found to have the biggest impact in 2010:

Big Four of Thrash Jam Out To Am I Evil?

Without a doubt, this was the biggest moment of the year. This had everybody talking. After months of hype, the Big Four played a handful of festivals in Europe over the summer, and at the last date, with the cameras rolling for a DVD, representatives from Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer joined Metallica on stage to jam on Diamondhead's classic thrasher "Am I Evil?". If you were living under a rock, you can watch the performance here. As for the future, the bands have already committed to a UK festival, with rumors highly suggesting that the package is finally going to come to the states. (more…)

Ozzy, This Is Why You Can't Have Nice Things…

Drivers of Los Angeles, be careful, Ozzy Osbourne is on the loose. TMZ "reports" that Ozzy rear ended some dude's Mercedes with his black Ferrari right before getting on the highway. Ozzy on the highway? Nobody is safe!

And if you're wondering, yes, it is an incredibly slow news day.

CYNIC Part Ways With Two Members

Cynic just released a statement saying they are parting ways with the two newer members of the band, bassist Robin Zielhorst and guitarist Tymon Kruidenier. This does not stem from any bad blood or creative difference, simply location differences as Robin and Tymon live in the Netherlands and Paul and Sean live in California. The statement also featured some good news. The band is in the pre-production stage of a new album with an expected release in the summer of 2011 (fuuuccckk yesssss!!!). Meanwhile, Robin and Tymon are going to work on the second release from their incredible band Exivious. Double fuck yes! So overall, all is swell. No replacements have been announced yet.
