AT THE GATES The Flames AT the End documetary is one every metal fan should see

A few weeks ago, we were invited by Earache Records to a private screening of the new At the Gates documentary. The metal blogeratti was out in full force with members of MetalSucks, Metal Insider, Noisecreep and others in attendance. The documentary was edited by founding guitarist Anders Björler and is included on The Flames of The End 3-disc DVD.

Before the screening we had the opportunity to interview Anders and talk about the DVD. He talked about how it was a very nostalgic experience that helped bring the band closer together. He also implied this DVD is the last chapter in the At the Gates history. Watch the full interview here.

The piece starts off focusing on the early years of each member of the band, going into great detail about previous projects and the formation of the group. While some, if not most of this is common knowledge, fans of Sweedish death metal will certainly appreciate the history lesson given here. There is such great detail given in addition to cutaways to bootleg footage, vintage photos and fliers. (more…)

What If Rock Music Were A Subway Map?

A little over a year ago, I posted a flow chart of heavy metal band names but I think this map is even more impressive. Some dude on Flickr made an entire subway map breaking down the history of rock music. It's quite epic. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Brian Posehn has some beef with iTunes

http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=103614078

We know how he feels about Slayer, now on his new comedy album, Fart and Wiener Jokes, metal comedian Brian Posehn talks about an experience with purchasing a (non-metal) song on iTunes. Needless to say it did not go well. The album is set to be released 4/27, and will feature a few new musical numbers as well with all-star contributions from Scott Ian, Jamey Jasta, Mark Morton, John Tempesta, and Satchel of Steel Panther. He will also be performing at the upcoming Revolver Golden God Awards. Check out another sample of Brian's album after the jump… (more…)

DEFTONES post another new song

I am getting really excited for new music from the Deftones. Between their first single, Rocket Skates and now the title track, Diamond Eyes, it looks like the band may see a bit of resurgence. I was never the biggest Deftones fan, but I always liked what I heard. Needless to say, when the full album comes out on May 18th, I will certainly be listening.

Stream DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN's Option Paralysis right now

We have not been able to shutup about The Dillinger Escape Plan the last few weeks. First, we posted their video for "Farewell, Mona Lisa", then after attending their opening tour date, I posted a bootleg of another new song, Chinese Whispers and yesterday we posted their appearance on Fox News. But, I know what you were really waiting for. The main event! An entire album stream of Option Paralysis. Well, today is your lucky day because that sumbitch is up right now on the band's MySpace page and hear the album in it's entirety. Then, come back here and let us know what your favorite track is.

The album is officially released next Tuesday, March 23rd.

IRON THRONES win Scion's No Label Needed contest

A few months ago we announced that we were teaming up with MetalInsider.net and Scion to bring you guys the No Label Needed contest, which would give one lucky band the chance of a lifetime with a hookup of getting songs produced by Machine, hanging out with the guys in Shadows Fall and asking them for advice, a shopping spree, a press campaign and more. All this without ever having to sign the record contact.

Well, the entries were tallied up and the lucky band is Minnesota's IRON THRONES. If you're a fan of bands like ISIS and Cult of Luna, you will totally dig this band. Metal Injection will be with the band every step of the way on their journey, and we will be documenting all their adventures, from their meetups to their recordings for the No Label Needed series which will premiere in the next few weeks.

Stay tuned, this is just the beginning!

The best review of BURZUM's Belus you will find…

Varg Vikernes is a controversial figure. The man who went to prison for infamously murdering his Mayhem bandmate, Euronymous, was released this year and ended up putting out an album. The brave bloggers at Demon Pigeon took to reviewing the record in the only way appropriate for this situation, in LOLCAT speak. If you are not familiar with LOLCAT speak, you must not use the internets. Here is a sample:

IT STARTS OFF WIF CLATTERIN AN BANGIN. IZ LIEK HEZ BASHIN SPOON AGAINST HIS PRISON BARS LOLOLOL. AN DEN TEH FURST SONG PROPR COMEZ IN. TEH FURST TING DAT HITS U IZ DAT HOMEBOY HAS BEEN IN PRISON SO LONG, HE MISD TEH INVENSHUN OV PRO-TOOLS AN DIGITAL RECORDIN TECHNOLOGY. IT SOUNDZ LIEK HEZ RECORDD IT ON DICATOFONE. FAIR ENOUGH, HE PROBABLY WANTD 2 KEEP IT RAW, BUT THARS HOOJ DIFFERENCE TWEEN RAW AN SHIT. AN DIS SOUND SHIT.

While not impressed with the first song, eventually writer Dannul Karnz comes around to the record saying "U CAN IMAGINE HIM IN DA WOODZ DRESD AS WIZARD RUNNIN AROUND IN CAPE. AKSHULLY IZ QUITE GUD WHEN U FINKZ BOUT IT LIEK DAT."

Show Recap

Gruhamed's Gonzo: SALOME steal the night

by Graham "Gruhamed" Hartmann

I thought I was too old to have a life changing experience at a rock show. Music is more important to me now than it ever was, but I never thought a live band could blow my mind like back in my teenage years. Last Friday proved me wrong. As I stood in the crowd inside the E&L Auditorium at NYU, watching Salome play a 40- minute doom set, I felt the same way I did when I first saw Sum 41 at 15 years old. (don’t judge me!) (more…)

CD Review: DAUGHTERS Daughters

by Graham "Gruhamed" Hartmann

I once read online that Daughters vocalist Alexis Marshall’s style could be accurately compared to the sound of Elvis Presley being tortured. I would argue from more of a Jerry Lee Lewis on hallucinogenic drugs standpoint, but both are pretty damn accurate. This acid trip of a band made an important change to their style with the 2006 full-length, “Hell Songs,” with Alexis making the ballsy decision to change his vocal style during their rise as underground idols; from his classic mathcore shriek (think Dillinger Escape Plan or The Number 12 Looks Like You) to clean rockabilly-style crooning (in the vein of Buddy Holly or Carl Perkins). The result broke barriers, and was embraced by metalheads and liberal art students alike. (more…)

DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, DARKEST HOUR, IWRESTLEDABEARONCE and ANIMALS AS LEADERS kick off their tour tonight in NYC

I am so fucking pumped to be attending tonight's kick off of the Dillinger Escape Plan's headlining run with Darkest Hour, iwrestledabearonce and Animals As Leaders. This show is stacked with a great lineup from top to bottom, and even though these bands will be playing SXSW in a week, it doesn't matter to me. Anytime I can see Dillinger, I will go and see them. They are absolutely my favorite live band. A few years ago, they played two shows in a row in NYC, and I went to both and after the second I remarked if they played an entire week's worth of shows, I'd go to those too. On top of that, all three support bands are awesome too. I've never seen Animals as Leaders live, but their album is amazing so I dobut they would disappoint. IWABO are always a fun time live and Darkest Hour never cease to bring a good show. Don't be a sucker and miss out on this tour. In case you missed them the first time, here are the dates: (more…)

Was the Insane Clown Posse really just on ABC's Nightline?

ABC's Martin Bashir interviews ICP

Did this really happen? ICP, who we might be giving just a bit too much publicity to these days, seem to be all over the place lately. It all started with that infomercial for their Gathering which was even parodied by SNL, and more recently with this Juggalo News parody.

Somebody at ABC News must have seen it and go, damn, we should just get the real ones on our show. And so they did. What resulted was a piece which felt almost exactly like something you would see during the Judas Priest era in the 80s, except that Judas Priest were awesome and ICP….well, they have clown makeup on. The whole piece was around 10 minutes long and was very unbearable. But I braved it and edited down the best parts of it for you loyal junkies. Do you see how much I love you? Watch it above.
